Alright, I admit that I’m not the smartest dude in the room. Heck, I’m not even the smartest person in my household. Even so, I might be able to jump on the tariff bandwagon if I knew what the ultimate goal is/was?
Trump and his merry band of tariff visionaries have said so many things about why we should implement tariffs.
Tariffs will replace the federal income tax
Tariffs will level the playing field and bring jobs back to the United States
Tariffs will reduce trade deficits
Tariffs will bless our country with a new golden (gilded) age
So what’s true? If the ultimate goal for Tariffs is to replace the income tax, why negotiate with the other countries? Just slap the damn thing on all imports and collect our money. Of course, prices will rise, and we can kiss our social safety net goodbye. At least we can all live in a wonderful and bigly feudal society. If this is the case, I’m a Panican!
On the other hand, if we are just using Tariffs to leverage negotiations with other countries, what happens if most of the developed world tells America to take a long walk off a short pier? Why would other countries commit economic suicide by capitulating to Trump? I guess the Tariffs will just remain in place and we can all pay higher prices together… That is, until stagflation grips our fair kingdom and then we can all go down together. I’m a Panican!
Maybe Trump just wants to tidy the trade deficits up a bit. Rumor has it, the penguins on Heard Island and McDonald Island are shaken to their core.
The Penguins may not engage in much global trade, but now, I guess they are Panicans too!
