President Trump on Monday issued China a new ultimatum: Rescind its retaliatory tariffs on the United States, or be subject to additional tariffs of 50 percent beginning April 9. The president said on Truth Social that he would also cease negotiations with China if it does not withdraw its plan to slap U.S. goods with a 34 percent tariff. In issuing his new threat to China, Trump also took aim at other countries contemplating their next moves in response to expansive U.S. tariffs set to take effect later this week. He pointed to his past threat that “any country that Retaliates against the U.S. by issuing additional Tariffs, above and beyond their already existing long term Tariff abuse of our Nation, will be immediately met with new and substantially higher Tariffs.” Still, the president said negotiations with other countries would “begin taking place immediately.”
Emphasis is mine.
Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn’t that make the Trump tariff on China 104%? The current Trump tariff on China is 54%, so another 50% would make it 104%. Or is my math wrong? Or is it that I cannot keep up with the insane tariff numbers that Trump is throwing around?
As for all those other nations, including all those uninhabitated islands, I have no idea what their tariffs would be if they retaliated against Trump. All I know is Trump is having fun with numbers. Ah! The POWER of Tariffs! Sort of like He-Man!
