The poster shown here was created by me for our band in 1967 (See date in bottom right circle). I don’t remember which of our members came up with the name for the band but being the idealistic youth we were, it seemed a fitting pushback against the bad actors and cataclysmic events of the time occurring both in and out of government. The Vietnam war was still raging, Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy had been assassinated just to name a few. Although we had an intrinsic understanding of what these words meant, we began to realize their true meaning as we started to experience what seemed like the unraveling of the world around us. But even as turbulent as things seemed then, none of us could imagine their import nearly 60 years later as we now are witnesses to the destruction of our democracy.

As is the case with many of us, youthful idealism gave way to cynicism as the years passed and fear replaced optimism. I’m also a realist — the future does not look rosy. What our country looks like in four years or even four months, no one can predict. However, we can state with certainty that it will look very different than it did just a few months ago. What’s to be done? Who will step up against those who would remake America into some version of a theocratic autocracy or even a full blown dictatorship? I’m pretty darn sure it won’t be our political leaders. We already know that congressional Republicans, terrified of Trump, will continue to do nothing. Democrats, a few of which are showing signs of life, aren’t able to unify the party to an extent that will provide any meaningful results. I see only one source of real power as was evidenced on April 5th through the many “Hands Off!” protests held around the country and even globally as WE THE PEOPLE organized, gathered and gave voice to our dissatisfaction and anger.

WE THE PEOPLE spoke with one voice against the tyranny, the injustice and the callous cruelty which has become the hallmark of Trump and his goons. Yes, they’re trying to overwhelm us with their chaos but we far outnumber them and in our hands lies the power to stop their illegal, unconstitutional and immoral actions if only we will wield it. I’d like to see similar ongoing protests planned with one goal being to recruit more and more participants as time goes by until an actual movement is born which might then grow to the extent that it can’t be ignored by our elected officials, nor by Trump himself. In the meantime, we all must resist at every opportunity and speak out against every injustice. Only then will America see positive results and maybe we can begin to repair the damage.

Remember: WE THE PEOPLE have power. History and our future as a country compel us to use it in this moment.
