Maybe it's time to state the obvious.... [1]

The country cannot continue with Donald Trump as president. He is completely unfit for the job, as we already knew, and completely incapable of developing any serious policy. He has achieved an astonishing amount of wreckage in a little over two months, and it is only getting worse. He has not only undermined the US by sabotaging a large part of our government, but now he has declared a trade war against nearly the entire world (with one glaring exception), thereby sabotaging everyone. Putin must be thrilled; this has to surpass his wildest expectations.
So what to do? Impeachment and conviction would be one option, but the Republicans will not get there soon enough and might not ever. The 25th amendment also requires Republicans to act responsibly for the good of the country. The only real option I can see is massive pressure on Republicans (and Democrats) to do specific things immediately, and not at their preferred glacial pace. The Congress needs to take back the power of the tariffs and to undo as much as possible of what Trump has done.
We need one such achievement: a demand made and met. Once that is done, we could hope that the Congress might act on a bipartisan basis and put Trump on a very short leash, with promises of additional lawmaking and/or impeachment if he strays.
That’s a long shot but we must take the first step. We’re going over a cliff and we damn well need to put on the brakes now instead of watching to see how bad it will be.
