DREAD
The churn in my stomach
will not stop.
I cannot unsee the El Salvador prison,
and men taken from our streets
Delivered into its slavery.
I dread this feeling,
Sickened as I am by images
and practice of torture
Inside that chamber of horrors.
Crafted with care in America
Is the intentional pain
And premeditated cruelty
Being performed in my name.
Snatched without warning
By men masked and nameless,
Bound and herded as are
Cattle bound for slaughter.
images I cannot unsee.
No crime has been charged.
No indictment delivered.
Guilty by tattoo.
Guilty by queerness
Guilty by association
It could be you next.
Don’t stand too close to me.
The churn in my stomach
Will not stop.
