Who Do You Admire? [1]

In HR and college entrance interviews, one may come across the question, “Who do you admire?” The question is designed to evaluate the applicant’s values and leadership qualities. Determining whether an applicant will fit with the “culture” of the company or institution is critical for organisational success in terms of achieving mission objectives. Jacob Kornbluh of the Forward Newsletter reports that Mr. Ed Martin, the Trump nominee for US Attorney for DC, is facing Senate confirmation. For such an important post, it is vital that we know who the candidate admires:

Last year, Martin praised Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, described by the Department of Justice as a Nazi sympathizer and white supremacist, as an “extraordinary man, extraordinary leader” during an award ceremony held at President Donald Trump’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey...Hale-Cusanelli would show up to work at a naval weapons station with a “Hitler mustache” and tell coworkers that “Hitler should have finished the job.” He also has a history of trafficking in antisemitism. In 2020, Hale-Cusanelli posted an online video railing against what he called a “Hasidic Jewish invasion” of Lakewood, New Jersey, and compared the Orthodox community there to a “plague of locusts.” He also harassed online a Jewish man in Ocean County, New Jersey, before Jan. 6 and threatened to visit his home on Shabbat...He was pardoned by POTUS for his J 6 felony and was not required to complete his 4 year prison term. To wit, forward.com/...

To read more about the exploits of Mr. Cusanelli—the object of Mr. Martin’s profound admiration, read this synopsis provided by the DOJ on September 22, 2022: www.justice.gov/…Let us now consider the mission statement of the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia:

..to enforce the criminal laws of the United States and the District of Columbia, represent the interests of the United States in civil litigation, and respond to the public safety needs of the community by leading an effective, well-coordinated law enforcement effort that contributes to the overall goal of improving the quality of life in the District of Columbia. To wit, www.justice.gov/...

Clearly, Mr. Martin’s values, gauged by the object of his admiration, runs counter to the professed mission statement reproduced above. The Republicans in Congress claim to “care” about ending the scourge of antisemitism in this country, yet are remarkably open to confirming a man who admires a virulent, anti-Semite. Adlai Stevenson was correct when he wrote, “A hypocrite is the kind of politician who would cut down a redwood tree, then mount the stump and make a speech for conservation.” This pretty much describes the state of politics today.
