It's quite likely you don't spend a lot of your idle hours speculating what would happen if the Moon suddenly and inexplicably fractured into several large pieces and a whole bunch of smaller ones, yet this remote possibility sets the stage for one of Neal Stephenson's most exciting speculative sci-fi novels to date: Seveneves. Scientists soon discover that all those pieces aren't going to remain in a stable orbit forever. In fact, it's predicted that humanity only has about 2 years to figure out how to evacuate the planet, because as the pieces begin to collide with each other and produce ever smaller pieces, those will all slowly spiral into Earth's atmosphere causing the largest extinction event the planet has ever experienced as the resulting heat and 'white rain' will vaporise the oceans and render the entire surface uninhabitable for several millennia.
Stephenson's novel weaves a fascinating tale of how a small chunk of humanity manages to escape into near space, and devise the means to generate energy, air, food, and mankind's progeny. In the latter part of the novel, some of our descendants return to a transformed Earth that has once again become capable of supporting life.
