Scores of people at Hands Off???? [1]

I just read an updated CNN story about the Hands Off protests yesterday. The “reporter” said that they were attended by “Scores of people.” This is perhaps technically true, because there were more than forty, but is also extremely misleading. The usual usage when writing describing multiples is to use the largest number possible. When a number is less than a thousand, but greater than two hundred, it is customary to described it as “hundreds” rather than “dozens” or even “scores.” The article gave the false impression that there were perhaps less than 100 attendees. The BBC article, on the other hand, speaks of a turnout of “hundreds of thousands.” Looking at the photos of various locations, it is obvious that the description of “hundreds of thousands” is closer to the truth. (The one that I attended, in a very red part of Texas, had hundreds of people). Another example of subtle right-wing bias in the media.
