Hands Off! After the protests yesterday, Maru posted this. It’s too terrific to say it just once:
x West Coast numbers are coming in, and estimates have now surpassed 5 million. People are still pouring into the streets—nearly 2% of the American population is rising up. America, we are so proud of you. You did it. — Alt National Park Service (@altnps.bsky.social) April 5, 2025 at 5:15 PM

Trump is flouting the law by flying people to El Salvador and failing to return one known innocent man ordered home by the court. If he chooses to ignore the court, what can be done? George Takei flags an excellent article that explains the two kinds of contempt of court and the other ways that judges can hold people accountable. Even orange people.
x Legal expert Professor Tobias Barrington Wolff breaks down the power struggle between the judiciary and the executive branch in a must-read Q&A with The Big Picture. Check it out here. 👇

At the advice of a conspiracy theorist, Trump is firing cyber security leadership, particularly the people who secure our election systems. This after relaxing cybersecurity operations against Russia a month ago. What great timing, after announcing the tariffs that make an enemy out of just about every nation in the world.
===
He announced tariffs on uninhabited Antarctic islands. Who does that?? He’s like a kid who put off his geography homework until midnight on Sunday night figuring it ought to be worth at least a D-. Penguin tariff meme t-shirts abound already.
I couldn’t resist this sign.
Last penguin sign, I swear. He’ll be remembered as the Penguin President.

Always look on the bright side of life.
x Walz: "Remember, Donald Trump has statements about, 'I don't think nuclear war would be that bad.' I guess we're lucky that he went after tariffs instead of that route."

Like the video Nanny Ogg posted of the British man saying “We see you,” this video of American and Canadian protesters makes me smile. The American people still have friends out there even if Trump doesn’t.
x ICYMI: From March 23rd, protestors from both sides of the US and Canada border held a protest against the Trump regime. This is what the US oligarch media isn't showing you. The protests grow bigger every month.

In spite of protests, the stupid continues. It was a great day yesterday and it was a great day this week when Cory Booker gave his inspiring filibuster. But this is no time to relax the fight against idiocy.

Sunday Science
Brain drain: The US has chosen not to support world class science anymore. America’s scientists are looking for positions elsewhere.

Shingles vaccine may help to reduce incidence of Alzheimers.
According to findings published this week in Nature, people who received the vaccine were 20 percent less likely to develop dementia over the next seven years compared with those who remained unvaccinated. (Zostavax was eventually replaced with another shingles vaccine called Shingrix in the U.K., the U.S. and many other countries. The authors of the new study noted that they focused on Zostavax because Shingrix didn’t become available in the U.K. until after their follow-up period.) (Scientific American)

23andMe has filed for bankruptcy. It claims to protect private data but that data has already been used by law enforcement. If your data is there, you might consider deleting it. Click the link for more info.
23andMe has assured customers that bankruptcy “does not change how we store, manage, or protect customer data.” Any future buyer, the company says, will adhere to those data standards. But California Attorney General Rob Bonta has urged Californians to instruct 23andMe to delete their data and destroy any biological samples stored at the company. Other attorney generals across the country are echoing that call and making residents aware of their rights. (Science News)
