Harold LeMay, a Tacoma businessman, loved cars and managed to collect more than 3,000 automobiles, trucks, and motorcycles over forty years of collecting. A number of the vehicles from his collection form the nucleus of the LeMay—America’s Car Museum. This collection of more than 300 cars, motorcycles, and trucks is displayed in a four-level building in Tacoma, Washington. One of the Museum’s cars is a 1930 Duesenberg Model J, often described as one of the most elegant cars ever created. During the Great Depression, it was of the most expensive cars.
In 1920, Fred and August Duesenberg established the Duesenberg Automobile & Motors Company in Indianapolis, Indiana to manufacture luxury and racing automobiles. The Duesenberg Model J was created in 1927 and went on the market in 1929, just before the Great Depression. In 1930, about 300 Model Js were made. The Model J featured a 420 cubic inch, 265 horsepower engine used in the company’s racing cars. It had a top speed of 118 mph and was considered the most powerful car of its time.
