Population 2,951 the county seat for Moore County. I am visiting in a nearby town on my way back to NH for the summer. Last night at dinner 3 locals told me “be very careful — that is a very MAGA town”.
indivisible posted a hands off gathering from 1:00 to 2:30. I arrived at 12:30 and there were about 10 people already there. By 1:15 the number was (my guess) 300. There were signs about education, Musk, Trump, Social security, Medicaid, and combinations of issues. People are so creative. One woman looked up chants on her phone and we walked around the courthouse which was ringed with people doing call “tell me what democracy looks like” response “this is what democracy looks like” and others. All ages, and genders were represented with older white woman showing up the most.
So in this dangerous, very MAGA town what was the counter protest like? One large white guy with a greasy ponytail walked around half the perimeter taunting people then gave up and went away. Three trucks with Trump paraphernalia circled and honked their horns for about 30 minutes before leaving. Oh the cars that drove by and there were many this is a busy location perhaps 1 in 10 ignored us or gave thumbs down or middle finger up. The others honked and waved. It was thrilling.
Something is working if this small red town’s enthusiasm was repeated throughout the country. “You may say I’m a dreamer but I’m not the only one” together we can change that which is unacceptable.
