Since I don’t focus too much in these regional Shades on my own home state and I came across this, I thought I’d share it tonight. From Minnesota Reformer . Update: Minnesotans are more prosperous than our lower taxed neighbor states
The Minnesota Legislature is in session, and it is a budget year, so state and local taxes are a big part of the deliberations. Many cite taxes in surrounding states, which are lower than those in Minnesota, to argue that we should lower our taxes to achieve the sort of prosperity surrounding states enjoy. This updates the data from a 2023 article, also published by the Minnesota Reformer. The purpose here is to demonstrate that there is evidence that higher taxes in Minnesota do buy us benefits not enjoyed by residents of surrounding states.✂️
The whole thing is worth reading and only reinforces my own biases.

Via The Texas Tribune , Attorney General Ken Paxton’s former aides win $6.6 million in whistleblower case
A Travis County district court judge on Friday awarded $6.6 million to four former senior aides to Attorney General Ken Paxton who said they were improperly fired after reporting Paxton to the FBI. Judge Catherine Mauzy stated in her judgment that the plaintiffs — Blake Brickman, Mark Penley, David Maxwell and Ryan Vassar — had proven by a “preponderance of the evidence” that Paxton’s office had violated the Texas Whistleblower Act. Each of the four were awarded between $1.1 and $2.1 million for wages lost, compensation for emotional pain, attorney’s fees and various other costs as a result of the trial. The judgment also said Paxton’s office did not dispute any issue of fact in the case, which stopped the Attorney General’s office from further contesting their liability. Tom Nesbitt, the attorney for Brickman and Maxwell, said in a statement that Paxton “admitted” to breaking the law to avoid being questioned under oath.✂️

I warned you last week that I was going to be revisiting West Virginia for a while. Via West Virginia Watch , Morrisey signs ‘MAHA’ bill banning a list of colorful artificial dyes in food sold in West Virginia
Gov. Patrick Morrisey signed a bill Monday that will ban a list of artificial food dyes from being included in food items sold in grocery stores or in school lunches. Republican lawmakers behind the measure have said the synthetic red, blue, green and yellow dyes are unnecessary and harmful. They’ve linked them to behavioral issues in children. ✂️
It’s startlingly difficult to find good news coming out of West Virginia. In the interest of supporting the state, here’s one good thing I found. There are probably many good things to find. Please do check out West Virginia Watch.

Out of Louisiana, from Louisiana Illuminiator , Louisiana jury rules Chevron must pay $740 million for coastal damages
A Plaquemines Parish jury has ruled that Chevron Corp. must pay the local government more than $740 million, blaming the fossil fuel company for decades of damage to its wetlands. The ruling is the first among several lawsuits from coastal parishes in Louisiana that want the oil and gas industry to compensate them for carving up swamps and marshland. Local officials contend the vast work related to energy exploration and pipelines has gradually exacerbated the natural depletion of coastal areas, making them less effective barriers against hurricanes. Chevron has said it intends to appeal the ruling. It’s among several companies from which Louisiana parishes are seeking billions in damages for coastal land loss. ✂️

From Source NM , One dozen New Mexico cities to join nationwide ‘Hands Off’ protests
Protests against U.S. President Donald Trump are planned for a dozen cities in New Mexico on Saturday, part of a mass mobilization effort at state capitals across the country and in Washington D.C. The “Hands Off” demonstrations center around the message, “We do not consent to the destruction of our government and our economy for the benefit of Trump and his billionaire allies,” according to its website. Rallies on Saturday will take place in Santa Fe, Ramah, Albuquerque, Taos, Gallup, Las Cruces, Portales, Socorro, Truth or Consequences, Los Lunas, Silver City and Alamogordo, according to a list of actions planned for New Mexico.✂️
I’d say something snarky about NM, like “I didn’t know there were a dozen cities in NM”, but the truth is that I’d love to visit their fine state.

As usual, News from the States has been an unbelievable resource for more regional news. Please visit them, early and often.

I’m tossing these two out simply because I was curious and I want to close browser tabs I have open. Skip it with no loss of continuity and long story short, yes, they are cheap Chinese knock-off guitars that are overpriced. I feel so owned, MAGA. Please stop owning me so hard. </s>
Almost nine minutes...
A little over 14 minutes...
C’mon! A bolt on neck on a Les Paul styled guitar?

In my eternal quest to close browser tabs, I followed up on the bill in South Dakota that would allow guns in bars. I thought the governor was going to let it silently fail or veto it outright. There didn’t seem to be much passion for it but he signed it anyway.
Welcome to South Dakota, the land where the guy at the end of the bar just might be packing heat.

The Jukebox tune-night , for those you who actually enjoy music. Ghost is the host with the most (from coast to coast).

Today is…
National Deep Dish Pizza Day . Do I really need to say more? I won’t even give you a picture because it will just cause a lot of unnecessary Pavlovian responses.
National Nebraska Day . Home of Warren Buffet, I do believe. I also believe the state motto is “Don’t you wish you were still in Iowa?” Here’s a long (19+ minutes) video.
National Dandelion Day , for those that celebrate it. 13+ minute video.
Considered by many to be a weed, all parts of the plant are edible and have medicinal properties.✂️
The Shade is open, folks. Have at it!
