DC Hands Off Rally: Photos [1]

We joined the rally at the Washington Monument in DC today. Because my husband is receiving cancer treatments and is immunocompromised, we had to drive down and find parking. It would have been so much better and more fun to take the Metro (DC’s subway). For rallies in DC, being on the Metro means you start joining the protest when you step on the subway train as other protesters with signs pile into the car and everyone cheerfully greets everyone. It’s a tradition here!
(P.S. forgot to add that on our way home, there was a small group of people at an intersection near our house with excellent signs, holding their own little suburban protest. We honked, waved, held up our signs to the window, and while stopped at the light, one of the women protesting told us that she tried to be at another busy intersection with a sign every weekday morning. That’s commitment!)
But we were lucky after driving round and round to find a parking space and join the crowds near the Monument. We walked around with our signs and mets lots of wonderful people (and ran into one person we knew). The mood was ebullient and energized. This is the heart of the federal government and it’s likely that a whole lot of people in the crowd have been severely damaged by trump while the nation as a whole is just beginning to feel the effects of the stupidest, most incompetent, most petty, most racist, most bigoted, most evil white house in all the US history.
And now some photos of signs with their people (none of them are people we knew):
We had a great talk with this guy after he complimented my husband on his ball cap (my husband was wearing his favorite, an Obama ball cap). He told us that he’s a citizen but both of his parents were undocumented immigrants. Both my husband and I are the children of an immigrant parent and for both of us, all our grandparents were immigrants:
I feel a strong connection to these two. Both our daughters have trans friends they’re very close to and we have grown close to them also:
Finally a photo of the two of us old folks:
