Another Saturday Night - Guitar Hero(es) [1]

This one’s been percolating in my mind for a while, and I’ve finally given it wings (no Paul McCartney-related pun intended). Tonight we celebrate the men and women who have mastered the guitar, creating transcendent melodies that transport our souls. We also celebrate the songs they play, especially those where the guitar takes the stage front and center, even if it’s just a memorable riff or hook that sticks in our memory banks for life.

I’ll begin with a woman who was a huge influence on the acoustic guitar—Maybelle Carter, aka Mother Maybelle, who first gained fame as a member of the Carter Family, country music’s first big stars (along with Jimmie Rodgers). She is often credited as being among the first to make the guitar a lead instrument in popular music. For decades after, her style (known as “the Carter scratch”) was studied and copied by a wide range of musicians. Here she is, doing “Single Girl, Married Girl” (cousin Sara on vocals).

One can’t mention guitars without paying homage to one of the pioneers of the electric guitar, Les Paul, here doing “The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise” (lyrics sung by then-wife Mary Ford).

All hail Poison Ivy, the undisputed queen of psychobilly guitar and the driving artistic force of the Cramps, one of those bands that never hit it big but was a huge influence on other musicians.

Cramps :: What’s Inside a Girl? (Dutch TV special; Ivy playing her Gretsch 6120 here)

For my last entry, I defer to Mark Knopfler’s good friend, the late, great Douglas Addams:

Mark Knopfler has an extraordinary ability to make a Schecter Custom Stratocaster hoot and sing like angels on a Saturday night, exhausted from being good all week and needing a stiff drink.

-So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

not sure if that’s the same guitar here, but it’s so beautiful, I’m not sure it really matters….

Dire Straits :: Brothers in Arms

There are so many others, I couldn’t possibly post them all, although I may add a few over the course of the evening. Multiple postings of the same artist are allowed and even encouraged (if we don’t have multiple Hendrix postings, I will be shocked more than Captain Renault was at discovering gambling going on at Rick’s Cafe). As I’ve said more than once, the posting police aren’t here tonight.

Gentle reminder:

Those on phones really appreciate it if you put the name of your selection in your comment along with your song; and people using screen readers need this in order to identify the video as well.

You know how this works…

Put your quarter(s) in the slot, your song(s) in the comments and share a memory or two (or three...).
