The Wall Street Journal reports that Ted Cruz “hopes President Trump's tariffs work.”
But he sees big risks for jobs and inflation.
"This is throwing a long ball deep into the end zone," he said on his Verdict podcast.
Ted Cruz Sees Risk of ‘Political Bloodbath’ if Trump’s Trade Gambit Fails, unfortunately behind a paywall.
You might recall that a while ago, Ted Cruz joined 47 other Republican senators to support Trump’s tariffs. Actually, that was yesterday. But today, he is already distancing himself.
"If we're in a scenario 30 days from now, 60 days from now, 90 days from now, with massive American tariffs and massive tariffs on American goods and every other country on earth, that is a terrible outcome," he said.
Really? How insightful!!! No wonder he has a podcast!
Ted Cruz speculates that the tariffs he voted for those many hours ago might cause a recession. But the best part is why he about the consequences of a recession:
"This is the biggest tax increase we have seen in a long, long time," he said. The perils extend to the GOP's hold on Congress, he added. "If we go into a recession, particularly a bad recession, 2026, in all likelihood politically, would be a bloodbath."
First, thanks for the unforced error on your own podcast, admitting that tariffs are a tax increase. Oops. (I’m sure your lord and master in the White House will demand a retraction and apology for that one.)
But the part I love is how he does not attempt to hide why he worries about a recession. Is he worried about working people losing their jobs? Does he care about seniors losing their savings? Children going hungry? Medicaid running low on funds?
No.
What he really cares about is losing an election. Politically, a bloodbath.
What a nightmare!!!
Is there anyone in politics (outside the White House) who so explicitly just cares about his own self interest? How did the Republicans find this guy??
Sounds like the kind of guy who would fly to Cancun if people in his own state encountered a natural disaster.
