Stop blaming the schools. [1]

When people hear the word education, they instinctively believe you’re talking about schools. But while formal learning is done in school, most of one’s education (learning) is done outside of school. As a matter of fact, most of it takes place at home, in your community or your places of worship if you’re religious.

So please stop using the word education when you mean schooling, you’re confusing people, particularly those that lack the schooling to understand the difference. Your school education or lack thereof is not the reason for someone’s lack of empathy and ethics. It is not even the reason for your lack of interest in politics and civic duty.

Things like this aren’t learned in school, just like good or bad manners are learned in the home, as is by the way the lack of interest in school learning. A teacher’s job is to teach kids Math, grammar, science, physics etc… it is not their jobs to teach kids empathy and ethics. (they try and do but it’s not really their job).

How do you think that Black folks are politically savvy, when their schools are the most underfunded and the most lacking in teachers? As Black parents we know it’s up to us to instill the importance of politics to our kids, we don’t live it up to the overworked, overstretched teachers, they have enough on their plate. The basic principles of politics may be learned in schools, but the practice of it is learned at home, like a tradition.

Racism, bigotry, discrimination and hate are also things one learns at home, your character, your principles are learned from your parents and your community, it is the way the act and speak when no one is looking that is the basis for biases and other negative traits. A child is a sponge, they are quick to catch on to the fact that their parents may smile and laugh with certain folks but call them names and sneer behind closed doors, that’s how they learn that they deem certain people unworthy of respect.

What good is learning history if when you go back home your parents tell you the civil war wasn’t fought over slavery but over states rights? Who, as a child are you going to believe? How do people who have degrees and masters up the wazzoo still peddle flat earth and anti vax theories? It’s not the schools.

Everywhere I turn people are saying “they are uneducated, ignorant, open the schools”… it is a form of excuse and blame shifting. When has being uneducated an indication of someone’s goodness or hatefulness? Never.
