Time to ignore the crazy guy and focus on the Republican Congress [1]

Trump has finally erased the last microscopic thought that he is somehow being performative and that he has a weird and/or evil plan and agenda. I never really believed that he did, but I have watched and participated in many discussions here and on social media where participants try to find that elusive needle in that massive haystack.

I give up. It ain’t there.

So what’s the point in continuing to rant on POTUS? He’s batshit and nothing anyone can say or do will reach him, let alone jolt him back to sanity.

Ignore him.

Instead, IMO, we need to pivot and mount full-throated attacks on the Republican Congress. If Trump is acting bonkers, it’s because they allow him to do so. Trump will always want to act nuts, but he wouldn’t be able to move as fast or far if Congress were to even slightly oppose him. The Republicans control both houses and this hangs around their necks … and only theirs.

It is now baked in that the American economy is going to hell in a handbasket. We have historic and absurd levels of tariffs. Trump is sacking and pillaging government functions that actually matter to businesses and individuals. We have an immigration policy which, apart from its hideous inhumanity, will remove highly productive workers from our workforce at the exact moment that Trump is forcing businesses to move operations back to the US. GDP is already starting to fall. All of this will generate big price increases that will re-ignite inflation. Everything will conspire to throw hundreds of thousands of workers out of work.

When the train hits, the American people will want/need someone to blame. At least some of the non-Harris voters will shift and blame Trump, but I don’t think progressives and democrats should encourage that to happen. Instead, we should try to deflect that righteous anger (or at least some of it) onto the feckless GOP idiots in the House and Senate.

They have the power, but refuse to use it.

Most of them will be up for re-election in the midterms.

They depend, even more than POTUS, on big money donations to fund their campaigns.

A lot of that big money will have shrunk due to Trump’s actions.

We need to establish Democrats as having sane, constructive solutions to the economic collapse. If progressives previously argued for tariffs to protect American workers, lose that thought. Now is not the time. Talk about how we can organize to mitigate the inevitable looming disasters (natural and economic).

Talk about everything the Republican Congress is NOT doing to help America cope. Make it a righteous, economics-grounded rant against the Congressional Republicans: in anticipation of their failure, as running commentary while the catastrophe unfolds, and as unrelenting blame about how they inevitably screwed up and let it happen.

I know Trump will be screaming and ranting throughout. I know that Trump and the GOP will be committing atrocities against groups and individuals on a daily basis. If we can multi-task, great. If not, IMO the economic message is the one that will reach the most Americans at the precise moment of their greatest personal pain.
