['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

How much bad news for them? So much that I am changing my usual format today to fit in as much of it as I can. Bad news in elections. Bad news in the courts, Bad news in Congress. Bad news worldwide. Bad news for all of them. Outrage and anger bad news. Pointing and laughing bad news. Thus.
Question: Réunion island is a French region. Why doesn’t it get tariffed with the EU?Could the administration be confusing things with how much extra it costs to send things there UPS?
We import a boatload of Nickel and Vanilla from Madagascar - not stuff you can grow/mine everywhere. We don’t sell them a much cos the average income is $510 per year.Because Trump’s Tax is based on trade deficit, not tariffs, we’re now slapping a 90% tariff on Madagascar.
Feel free to mine any of our usual sources, such as my Good News Roundup news sources Feed on Bluesky. Thus
x Both Johnson and Thune saw Rs break ranks with them this week on important votes. Let's hope that courage can be contagious, even with Rs in this awful Trump era.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he will impose a new 10 percent tariff on all imported goods along with an additional punitive import tax tailored for each of about 60 countries that his advisers say maintain the most unfair barriers against U.S. products. “In the face of unrelenting economic warfare, the United States can no longer continue with a policy of unilateral economic surrender,” Trump said while announcing the tariffs at an event in the White House Rose Garden.
Actual Good News
x The moment when @corybooker.com displaced segregationist Strom Thurmond for the longest marathon in Senate history. 24 hours, 33 minutes and counting

Not just the longest, one of the best. AFTER he finished the ultramarathon speech, Booker appeared on Rachel Maddow’s show to talk about Good Trouble and such.
Heather Cox Richardson
Historian Heather Cox Richardson has been "removed" from Facebook
This turns out not to be the case. Even her critics give her credit.
PEOPLE!! Facebook has NOT "disappeared" Heather Cox Richardson! While I'm not a fan of her "her opinion presented as fact" style, I highly respect her, and I wouldn't want such a thing happening to her, so I investigated, including by talking with my Facebook contacts. Of course they aren't intentionally removing any of her posts or 'going after her'. It is true that (for at least some people, including, apparently, her) if you go directly to her page you may not see all of her latest posts, but you WILL see them in your feed or in search results, and if you click on them you will see them pop-up style. But don't take my word for it, do a search on "heather cox richardson" and then look at the search results. You will see, for example, her post from yesterday (April 1), and clearly at least 225,000 other people have seen it. So, at worst it's a Facebook glitch. When it happens to "regular" people it's a glitch, but when it happens to public figures all of a sudden it's a conspiracy. Only, it isn't. It's happened to me too, the only difference is that I didn't present my opinion about what was happening as.. you know... fact. As Nathan Poe’s Law constantly reminds us, never ascribe to malice what can be adequately explained by incompetence. Now the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad news for them.
Elections
We lost in Florida, but by margins that struck fear into Wrong-Winger hearts.
As to Wisconsin,
By 15 points!

Lock up the gang members, but not innocent gay hairdressers.
The courts have taken up that very question, and the Trumpistas have made plain their Contempt of Court.
Congress
Mike Johnson &co. cannot count votes. They lost a vote on banning new mothers from proxy voting, and now nothing, nothing, NOTHING will get a vote all week. Nine Republicans voted for the measure.
x Mike Johnson just sent the House home for the week. It's *Tuesday*. Johnson was pissed off that he lost a vote on the issue of proxy voting in Congress for new moms and dads. Johnson doesn't like the idea. He lost, and he's sulking until next week. That's what it looks like when the GOP has power. — Mark Jacob (@markjacob.bsky.social) April 1, 2025 at 2:27 PM
Neither the House nor the Senate Republican majorities are doing anything about Trump and Musk illegally holding up money they appropriated and trying to shut down agencies they created. Very few have anything at all to say about it.
GOP lawmakers divided on Musk, seen by some as a liability
One GOP senator said Musk’s buyout effort offering more than seven months of severance was “poorly executed,” and his latest attempt to slim federal agencies by pushing a reduction in force has failed to consider how it might impact federal agencies. “I think they’re just looking to reduce numbers — it’s not efficiency, it’s not output. It’s, ‘We just need bodies gone.’ And I don’t know that’s the metric that you use,” the senator said. The GOP senator also reacted angrily to Musk’s call for a “wave of judicial impeachments” in response to federal judges putting holds on Trump’s executive orders and actions.
x Would be nice if congress could remember it is illegal for the president to unilaterally impose tariffs — Patrick Daugherty (@rotopat.bsky.social) April 2, 2025 at 4:02 PM
The World
The tariff war is going particularly badly, with global retaliation mixed together with pointing and laughing.
x Trump to impose tariffs on Gondor, Coruscant and Wakanda. — Dr Alex Cruikshanks (@alexsaysstuff.bsky.social) April 2, 2025 at 4:33 PM
And massive snark.
x List of countries not subjected to tariffs: Russia
Belarus
North Korea
Cuba They apparently took the time to impose tariffs on several uninhabited islands, so the omissions are extra noteworthy. If you spot others please flag! — Aaron Fritschner (@fritschner.bsky.social) April 2, 2025 at 5:07 PM
x Trump is calling them “reciprocal” tariffs, but the code has been cracked — the “tariffs charged to 🇺🇸” column is not tariffs on us at all… it’s 🇺🇸 trade deficit divided by 🇺🇸 imports from that country x100 PSA TO THE MEDIA: Stop calling them “reciprocal tariffs”

'Bad, bad, bad': JPMorgan's scathing assessment of new tariff economy stuns social media
Analysts at JPMorgan Chase warned that the impact of President Donald Trump’s new set of tariffs could take the economy “perilously close to slipping into recession.” The gloomy economic forecast was released hours after Trump rocked the global financial markets with his announcement of sweeping tariffs in a Rose Garden ceremony on Wednesday – which he dubbed “liberation day.” But as financial markets tumbled in the wake of the tariffs targeting China and the European Union in particular, analysts at JPMorgan estimated hours after the announcement that the tariffs would amount to “the largest tax increase since the Revenue Act of 1968.”
The Maladministration
x Every day Trump refuses to fire Waltz and Hegseth is going to cost him politically while putting our national security at risk. He should admit he messed up and rip the damn band-aid off. Fire these clowns.
