This Quora poster eloquently stated what I have believed for some time:
They don't want to take over the government, they want to destroy that ability of anyone to govern.
Traditionally, government was the locus of power in a society. Whether it be right wing or left wing, the most significant power was exerted through government action. That is no longer the case.
The real goal of people like Musk & Thiel is corporate feudalism.
The technology has advanced to the place where the people holding the guns are largely irrelevant. The people holding the money & information are much more important to wielding power than people pointing guns. Guns were about controlling resources by threatening to destroy those resources. Needless to say, that is usually somewhat counterproductive. You can control those resources w/o destroying them by controlling the information that people use to make decisions. Furthermore, controlling finance (i.e. the energy which enables people to act in the world) restricts people's ability to act in ways contrary to the goals of those people in control.
Placing people in positions of leadership (of a government) makes them a target. It is more effective to wield power without letting anyone know who you are. Modern technology makes this possible. While some people could survive if their digital footprint were erased, they would find it difficult to provide any resistance to those in power. They would only be able to survive in ways that produce little or no threat. Perhaps you could act as a Wasp but w/o any external allies, you could readily be ignored until ultimately eliminated.
The libertarian dream of people like Peter Thiel & Elon Musk would ultimately become a nightmare for 99% of the population.
