Tesla quarterly sales slump 13% in Q1/2025 [1]

Tesla reported a 13% drop in vehicle sales in the first three months of this year, making it the electric vehicle maker’s worst quarter since 2022. It’s another sign that Musk’s once high-flying electric car company is struggling to attract buyers.

The drop is likely due to a combination of factors, including its ageing lineup (looking more like de-badged Mazdas these days), shit new offerings (does anyone actually have anything good to say about the Shystertruck), competition from rivals (see below) and a backlash from Musk’s embrace of mad-cap divisive right-wing politics. It also is a warning that the company’s first-quarter earnings report later this month will very likely disappoint investors.

Tesla reported deliveries of 336,681 vehicles globally in the January-March quarter. Analysts expected much higher deliveries of 408,000. The final figure was down from sales of 387,000 in the same period a year ago. The decline came despite deep discounts, zero financing and other incentives.

Despite Donald Dumbster’s attempts to shore up company sales with a comical Tesla infomercial in front of the White House (“it’s full of computer”) and Musk’s delusional assurances to employees that the company has a “bright and exciting” future, the drop in sales was striking.

It will be difficult to pin the blame on market sentiment for this downturn. In stark contrast, GM’s EV sales in the same quarter almost doubled by a whopping 94% to 32k vehicles which, although low by Tesla standards, does show a marked shift in consumer brand preference when it comes to EVs, very much backed up by the fact that electric vehicle sales overall in the USA grew 19.2% in Q1 2025.

That the brand is under pressure is no longer in doubt, with the sentiment towards the company now firmly tied to its polarising CEO.
