The Face-Eating Leopard Problem Goes Back 2 Million Years. Science Says So. [1]

Paleontologists working in the Swartkrans Cave in South Africa have discovered remains of what seems to have been a female hominin about a meter tall. This rare find, discovered in ancient sandstone, has scientists hyped up.
But for Kossacks, the location of the find will bear special significance. “Leopards tend to hang out in trees near cave openings and prefer to pounce on prey that weighs around 55 pounds (25 kilograms), according to the researchers. This tiny P. robustus, which was found inside a cave, probably weighed about 60.4 pounds (27.4 kg). Carnivore tooth marks were also found on the hominin's bones, offering further clues about the cause of death. Other fossils at the site also have puncture marks that match leopard teeth.”

Might not Adrian Bott’s choice of wording in the canonical October 2015 Tweet ('I never thought leopards would eat MY face,' sobs woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party”) actually reflect a species memory deeply bred into humans like fear of snakes?
