Chicago Sun-Times: Highland Park mass shooting victims can sue gunmaker Smith & Wesson, judge rules by David Struett
A judge granted a victory to Highland Park parade shooting victims, allowing their lawsuits to proceed against Smith & Wesson on claims the gun manufacturer marketed the gun used in the massacre to teenagers. Lake County Judge Jorge L. Ortiz on Tuesday partially denied a motion to dismiss the case by Smith & Wesson and let more than two dozen wrongful-death lawsuits to proceed. The judge also denied motions to dismiss by Red Dot Arms and Bud’s Gun Shop, the gun dealers where Robert Crimo III bought the M&P 15 rifle he later used to kill seven people and wound dozens more at a July 4, 2022, parade in downtown Highland Park. Crimo III pleaded guilty last month to murder and attempted murder. “Today’s historic decision sends a clear message that the gun industry does not have carte blanche to engage in irresponsible marketing of assault rifles, without any concern for the obvious dangers of such marketing,” lawyers said in a statement from firms Romanucci & Blandin, Everytown Law and Wallace Miller.
The New York Times: Cory Booker Condemns Trump’s Policies in Longest Senate Speech on Record by Tim Balk, Mike Ives, and Matthew Mpoke Bigg
Senator Cory Booker, his voice still booming after more than a day spent on the Senate floor railing against the Trump administration, on Tuesday night surpassed Strom Thurmond for the longest Senate speech on record, in an act of astonishing stamina that he framed as a call to action. Mr. Booker, a New Jersey Democrat and one-time presidential candidate, began his speech at 7 p.m. on Monday, vowing to speak as long as he was “physically able.” In a show of physical and oratorical endurance, he lasted past sunset on Tuesday, assailing President Trump’s cuts to government agencies and crackdown on immigration. He ended his speech at 8:05 p.m., 46 minutes after eclipsing Mr. Thurmond’s 24-hour 18-minute filibuster of a civil rights bill in 1957. He finished by quoting John Lewis, the civil rights hero and congressman. Mr. Booker said of Lewis: “He said for us to go out and cause some good trouble, necessary trouble, to redeem the soul of our nation. I want you to redeem the dream. Let’s be bold in America.” Earlier, cheers broke out in the chamber when Mr. Booker passed Mr. Thurmond. For a moment, Mr. Booker addressed the man he had eclipsed.
Roll Call: Republicans win Florida special elections to help pad House margin by Nick Eskow and Jackie Wang
Republicans held on to a pair of deep-red House seats in Florida special elections Tuesday, helping to shore up their slim majority in the chamber and overcoming a well-funded challenge by Democrats in districts that Donald Trump easily won less than five months ago. In the 6th District, which includes Daytona Beach, former state Sen. Randy Fine defeated Democrat Josh Weil, who had benefited from a fundraising surge fueled by Democratic anger at the Trump administration. Fine was leading 54 percent to 46 percent when The Associated Press called the race at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time. He will succeed Republican Michael Waltz, who won a fourth term in November by 33 points before resigning to become Trump’s national security adviser. And in the 1st District, GOP nominee Jimmy Patronis, the state’s former chief financial officer, won a Florida Panhandle seat left vacant by the November resignation of Republican Matt Gaetz. Patronis was leading Democrat Gay Valimont 55 percent to 44 percent when the AP called the race at 8:20 p.m. Eastern time.
NBC News: Susan Crawford wins Wisconsin Supreme Court race, defying Elon Musk by Adam Edelman
Susan Crawford has won a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, NBC News projects, allowing liberals to maintain their narrow majority on the battleground state’s highest court — and defying Elon Musk after he spent millions of dollars to oppose her. Crawford, a Dane County circuit judge who was backed by Democrats, secured a 10-year term on the court over Brad Schimel, a Waukesha County circuit judge and a former Republican attorney general. As the first major battleground state election of President Donald Trump’s second term, the technically nonpartisan contest drew national attention and became the most expensive state Supreme Court race in U.S. history. The outcome is a setback for Trump and his billionaire adviser, Musk. Trump endorsed Schimel in the final stretch of the race, while Musk injected himself into the center of it, spending huge sums of money, visiting Wisconsin days out from Election Day and frequently posting about the race on his X feed. In turn, Democrats and progressive groups made Musk their primary villain, attacking his influence on the race and his efforts to slash federal jobs and the government through the Department of Government Efficiency. Crawford’s victory also means liberals will maintain a 4-3 advantage on the court for at least another year heading into a term when it could decide cases about abortion rights, unions and collective bargaining rights, and congressional maps and redistricting.
Guardian: Myanmar earthquake deaths set to pass 3,000 as looming monsoon sparks urgent call for aid by Kate Lamb, Su Myat, and agencies
The death toll from the worst earthquake to hit Myanmar in a century is expected to surpass 3,000 on Wednesday, as humanitarian agencies urged other countries to ramp up aid ahead of the monsoon rains. Close to the epicentre, in the decimated cities of Mandalay and Sagaing, traumatised survivors slept in the street, with the stench of corpses trapped under the rubble permeating the disaster zone. Water, food and medicine are in short supply, and the monsoon could hit in May. “The devastating impact of Friday’s earthquake is becoming clearer by the hour – this is a crisis on top of a crisis for Myanmar, where the humanitarian situation is already dire,” said Arif Noor, the Myanmar country director for the humanitarian agency Care. “Rescue teams are still recovering those trapped under the rubble, and hospitals are overwhelmed. The physical and mental scars of this catastrophe will last for decades.”
BBC News: Haiti gangs storm town and release 500 inmates from jail by Vanessa Buschschlüter
Gang members stormed the town of Mirebalais in central Haiti on Monday and released about 500 inmates from prison. A spokesman for Haiti's national police said extra officers had been deployed to the town, which is located 50km (30 miles) north-east of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Police officials said they had regained control of Mirebalais, but local reports warned that many of the escaped inmates were still roaming the streets. Armed gangs are in control of almost the entire capital, but this latest attack seems to suggest that they are increasingly targeting towns in other areas of the country.
