Well before the end of his speech, his voice had gone raw, but his resolve had grown.
He stood at that podium speaking to all Americans, for all Americans, did you listen?
When his legs trembled from standing for so long, he didn’t quit, he leaned on the podium to support his weight, and he kept on speaking. He spoke of his love for this country of ours and wished all could love it as much as he did, for then perhaps they would strive to save her.
He spoke beyond his endurance, fatigue filled his eyes and yet he kept on speaking, not of nonsensical things but of the dangers of this road we have embarked on. He, spoke of the threats to our ways of life, of our turning our backs on the dream of our ancestors, that this country be a dream fulfilled by all who could dream.
And while he stood there speaking for over 25 hours, how many sat in the comfort of their homes to listen for that much a time? I’d wager not many, not a few, but perhaps a handful. But his words echoed still as we ate, slept, bathed and did the things we did every day.
But today was no ordinary day, today a man spoke to our souls, to our hearts and while we may not have heard him as he spoke, we all should make time in the next few days, to listen to the words he spoke for it is to tell us things that mattered, it is to enlighten us that he stood there and spoke for so long, knowing most of us were not listening.
I will not repeat his words here, for the least you can do for Cory Booker is to seek out his speech and hear it for yourselves, even if you do it bit by bit. But no one should ignore the words of a man who stood for over 25 hours in hopes that you would listen.
Go and listen.
