Now We're Talking Jersey Style! Senator Cory Booker Holding a Real Filibuster on the Senate Floor!! [1]

Just a quick diary: I’ve just seen on MSNBC that U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D) — NJ is holding a filibuster on the floor because the nation is in crisis, and he says he’s going to talk for “as long as he is physically able.”

Unlike withholding votes under the “virtual filibuster” rule — Booker is standing up, for real and grinding the Senate business to a halt. There has been lots made on this site, and elsewhere, of the disparate nature of resistance to the illegal Trump-Muskian fascistic power grab (along with the incompetance, grift, and abuse of human souls that is going along with it).

The courts have been great, although federal courts can’t be seen live on TV, which takes some of the umph out of legal resistance. Protests and town halls show that regular voters are showing up. It’s clear that — as in Trump administration 1 — voters are flipping red seats (and holding blue ones) up and down the levels of US government in disproportionate numbers.

But there has been some disdain of what our elected officials have done in DC with the limited amount of power given to the minority. Yes, Bernie and AOC have been out campaigning across the country, and that’s awesome! Our former VP candidate and MN Governor TIm Walz, along with a cadre of other democrats have been holding town halls across the country in red districts where Congressmen and Senators will not face their own voters. All of this is excellent — and better than where we’ve been since the inauguration and all the Project 2025 BS had caught us flatfooted.

Enter Senator Booker. This type of verbal, vocal opposition is what the filibuster was invented for. The ability to withhold that super-majority of 60 votes is not, and is great when it works for your side and horrible when it works for theirs.

But unlike the 60 vote threshhold, Booker is saying something, doing something — speaking with all of his power as one human being. I’m not sure how long he’ll be able to do this, but these moments are extremely rare. Honestly, we have 47 Senators on the right side of history, and it would be absolutely fantastic to see every single one of them — in succession — filibuster on the floor and hold the Senate hostage for a month or more.

Come to think of it, a sit-in or two by Democrat Congresspeople wouldn’t be a bad idea either.
