x Musk staffers gained access to a system at the Interior Department. We had resisted their attempts for about two weeks to obtain administrative access to the program. Two IT officials who stood their ground are now on administrative leave and under investigation. — Alt National Park Service (@altnps.bsky.social) March 31, 2025 at 12:07 PM

MAGA is Bad for Business

One odd feature of U.S. politics is that business people, especially small business owners, always seems to believe that they will do better under Republicans, even though history shows that business does better under Democrats. Small business owners supported Trump in the last election, despite ample evidence that he would be very bad for business. And now they’re getting a rude awakening. Let’s talk for a second about price controls.✂️

x The mom of one of Elon’s many children says she is selling her Tesla to make up for his slashing child support by 60% to punish her for speaking out (The guy the *family values* party is championing despite all the damage he’s doing will not be winning Father of the Year)

The New York Times is on the wrong side of history

Over the weekend, the New York Times published a pompous editorial headlined, “The Democrats Are in Denial About 2024.” The editorial wasn’t wrong – much of the party’s leadership is indeed in denial – but the obvious, ignored fact is that the Times is in denial too. During the 2024 campaign, the Times sane-washed Trump’s mental unfitness, downplayed MAGA fascism, and sometimes treated a political turning point for our country as a source of lighthearted amusement ✂️ The Times has built its newsroom on Neutrality Island, clinging to its concept of objectivity so fiercely that its news coverage takes no clear position on democracy vs. fascism. A comparable scenario would be if the Times’ crime coverage decided to be objective on whether it was good or bad when people got mugged on the subway.✂️

Will Guam Be America’s Next Pearl Harbor?

While much of the world is focused on Donald Trump’s selling out of Ukraine and aggressive threats toward America’s peaceful neighbors Mexico, Canada, Panama, and Greenland, if you’re in U.S. military intelligence, you’re more likely to be tracking with concern a specific Chinese threat to a piece of geography that is not in the headlines. The DF-26 intermediate-range ballistic missile represented a major upgrade of President Xi Jinping’s war-fighting toolbox when it entered service in 2016. The missile (of which about 250 have been built) is precise enough to target aircraft carriers, and it can be equipped with nuclear as well as conventional warheads. But perhaps the most striking thing about the DF-26 is its 2,500-mile range. That’s not enough to reach the continental United States, but it certainly suffices to target America’s westernmost territory in the Pacific. That’s why the DF-26 is sometimes called “the Guam killer.”✂️

I’ve never been to Guam. Both my dad and brother did stints in the navy based there and I had a housemate from there. I have a lot of interest in the island.

Elon Musk Amazed At How Much Cheaper Bribing Voters Is In Midwest

“I knew there was a lower cost of bribing out here, but I didn’t expect to find this many votes for essentially nothing,” said Musk.

x Our government has spent $100,000 a person to hold migrants at the Gitmo concentration camp for less than six weeks. That's about $17,000/week for each migrant. They could have stayed at a Ritz-Carlton for that. What's this you say about government waste and efficiency, Elon?

x I'm just a old country website proprietor but im gonna guess that having a far-right militia with guys dressed up as Hitler as the defense/face of a company which sells high dollar electric cars probably isn't as strong a business proposition as some people seem to imagine. — Josh Marshall (@joshtpm.bsky.social) March 31, 2025 at 1:53 PM

Americans are beginning to fear dissent. That’s exactly what Trump wants

I was talking recently to a friend who’s a professor at Columbia University about what’s been happening there. He had a lot to say. When he needed to run off to an appointment, I asked him if he’d text or email me the rest of his thoughts. His response worried me. “No,” he said. “I better not. They may be reviewing it.” “Who’s ‘they’?” I asked. “They! The university. The government. Gotta go!” He was off. My friend has never shown signs of paranoia. ✂️

x A new video released by Musk’s PAC could serve as further evidence that its massive cash giveaways constitute illegal vote buying. In the clip, a Wisconsin woman who won a $1 million prize explicitly links her winnings to following Musk’s instructions to vote.

Today is…

National Crayon Day . Delicious and so nutritious. Short video.

-—

National Prom Day .

NATIONAL CLAMS ON THE HALF SHELL DAY . I’m not really a seafood guy. I’m willing to learn, but it doesn’t come naturally to me, as a midwestern boy. P.S. I love salmon.

The Shade is open. Have at it, folks.
