"Talk about March Madness:" Final Update on Early Voting & GOTV in FL-06 [1]

The final stages of campaigns are highly choreographed. And the more experience leaders and volunteers have, the more successful they will be. We feel good about what we’ve done, getting the “easy” votes to the polls on behalf of Josh Weil last week. The thing is that everyone knows this is a reach district, even in special election conditions. This is a seat Republicans should win by two dozen points. Everything has to fall just right to win. Right now, it feels that this is possible, and this diary outlines what we have done in parts of Volusia and Flagler counties to make it possible.

Hope Springs from Field PAC [dated website] volunteers have been knocking on doors in FL-06 since the first weekend of February. FL-06 has a special congressional election tomorrow due to the resignation of incumbent GOP Rep Michael Waltz. We canvassed on everyday last week, specifically GOTV canvassing, where we “dragged” voters from their doors to Early Voting centers. Early Voting ended Saturday.

We are continued our “prospecting” canvass yesterday, trying to reach out to voters we might have missed, before returning to full-tilt GOTV today. I probably don’t have to tell you that people are enthused. How enthused, you ask? Saturday, 375 volunteers came out; most of them were working on a hybrid canvass with GOTV but 46 of them were devoted to Early Voting GOTV. On Sunday, another 156 volunteers have shown up. Today, we will continuing canvassing during the afternoon and place special GOTV door hangers on the doors of Democrats and other likely Weil voters tonight. This is an afterwork operation, and it will run long into the night.

Tonight’s operation needs to go off with military precision because we will have to hit a lot of houses. We won’t be knocking, but each visit has multiple purposes. First, we want to leave our GOTV door hanger at the spot that will be seen by the voter. So if there is campaign lit accumulating at the front door, we make a note of that and look (cautiously — it will be nighttime after all) to see if there is another entrance that gets used. If the house is difficult to locate, we make note of that. Anything to make it easier on our “Runners” tomorrow. We especially make note of any house that can’t be found. It happens, but if it can’t be found by someone who is taking time to find it, even in the dark, it won’t be found by our “Runners,” who are “speeding” through their lists tomorrow.

Yesterday, we trained our “Runners,” volunteers who will be circulating on Election Day. Training was done by our supervolunteers from southern Georgia. It was a sight to see with these young African-American women training mostly older White males on being a runner. We held 6 of these training sessions this weekend, each one was apparently different, as the leaders brought their stories about GOTV for Ossoff and Warnock to the table. Many of our Florida volunteers hung on every word of these stories and i’ve said before that their experience in winning races we weren’t supposed to lifted spirits for tomorrow.

But one of our volunteers did tell me that he know understands why i say to we need to work GOTV every election because you get better at it — and you never know when it will make the difference.

We have a lot of people hoping Tuesday will be that day! Won’t that be amazing!

Like Election Day, runners who do the knock and dragging are expected to knock on a door three times (hence three rounds throughout the day), hoping to find the targeted voter at home. If we do (find the voter), then we ask them if they have voted yet (“you can vote right now!”) and, if not (as expected), “we can take you to vote right now!” Of course, finding people who have voted reduces the size of the list for the next round. And this (taking people to go vote) has actually been more successful in this district than usual, because there are a higher number of seniors, many of whom don’t mind being ferried to the polls!
