“Ein Reich, Ein Volk, Ein Donald” February 22, 2025

By now, if anyone doesn’t believe that Demagogue Donald has a love affair with absolute monarchs as well as authoritarians, they are living in an alternate universe. Trump may be from New York City (NYC) but as the Huffington post aptly put it in a February 19, 2025 article by Sara Boboltz, he seems to want to stick it to the Big Apple in any way he can. He has, according to this article, “seemingly given in to his autocratic impulses.” Hey, major media outlets, why did it take you so long to understand that Donald is an autocratic dictator wannabe?

In a social media post that Donald wrote on “Truth Social,” he congratulated himself and declared, “CONGESTION PRICING IS DEAD. Manhattan, and all of New York is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING!” What triggered this bonkers comment? A fight Trump wanted to pick with NY and its Democratic leaders, of course. In his latest “I Hate New York” move, Donald’s Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy sent NY Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul a letter. That letter notified her that his agency was revoking the Federal Highway Administration’s approval to alleviate the city’s traffic congestion pricing plan. Under this plan, since January 5, 2025, NYC has been charging drivers a $9 fee to use roads south of 60th Street in Manhattan, although drivers are not charged if they only use the highways that ring the island borough. NYC has limited exceptions to these tolls for low income individuals and people with disabilities that make it hard for them to use public transit. Data from New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) suggests that this $9 fee has reduced the amount of vehicles on surface roads and improved commuting times. Gov. Hochul even pointed to the fact that there is much traffic congestion in front of Trump Tower and her plan would lessen this. And what did Trump and Duffy, both GOPers, who “supposedly” back local solutions by states and cities say about this? Transportation Secretary Duffy, with Trump’s approval, stated that Hochul’s plan was “a slap in the face to working class Americans and small business owners” who use cars instead of the city’s 24-hour subway and bus system. Duffy then went on to claim that these payments that are being used to raise funds for NY’s crumbling public transit are violating federal law. Translation: Trump and other right wingers want to destroy public transportation and back gas guzzling automobiles. They do not want to improve public transportation in any way, shape, or form. NY, Demagogue Donald should know, has a terrific public transportation system that has been in use for years. And for most people, it is very hard to drive and park cars in Manhattan.

Governor Hochul was furious at Trump’s action. She rightly stated, ”We are a nation of laws, not ruled by a king.” Hochul added that, “The MTA has initiated legal proceedings in the (federal) Southern District of New York to preserve this critical program. We’ll see you in court.” NY’s MTA now joins the numerous other agencies suing the Trump-Musk attempts to destroy our government.

Trump and his allies could care less. They seem to think all of this is a “y uu ge” joke. White House deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich loved Trump’s “King” comment. Budowich posted on X an AI-generated image of Donald draped in ermine, wearing a crown. The official White House X account similarly posted a fake “Time Magazine” cover with a crowned Trump and the headline, “LONG LIVE THE KING.”

Why should we be so surprised at Demagogue/absolute Monarch wannabe Donald’s behavior? Three days previous to posting this White House X account, Donald stated that laws do not apply to him. In that quote, Donald stated, “He who saves his Country violates no Law.” That quote was borrowed from 19th Century French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Donald, as the Huffington Post, aptly noted, has long exhibited a fascination with autocrats and dictators whose power stands in clear conflict with the democratic principles in our Constitution. His “love affair” with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin, with whom he is willing to destroy Ukraine, should, similarly, not shock us. And get this. Right-wing anti-immigrant terrorist Anders Breivik, who murdered 77 people in Norway, posted this same quote in his 2011 manifesto.

In Trump’s world view, he is not only above the law. He also makes laws in order to save “his Country.” This “I am above the law” and “do not violate it” Trumpian attitude directs Donald’s officers and followers to understand that he is remaking the law and operating outside of it. These rabid followers of his can and should, therefore, follow his lead. Trump’s “I am above the law and I alone can make laws to save ‘my Country’” is, in effect, Trump’s “leader principle.”

“Leader principle?” Ever heard that term before? It sounds better “auf Deutsch,” or in the “original German,” to quote comedienne Stephanie Miller, the daughter of a Nuremberg Nazi War Crimes trial prosecutor. It was then known as the “Fuhrerprinzip” or “Fuhrer principle.” Under the Nazis, that was how “supreme leader” Adolf Hitler’s will was transformed into law, as noted by the Huffington Post. Hitler talked of being “responsible for the fate of the German nation and thereby the highest judicial authority of the German people.” According to Nazi propagandists, Hitler was “imbued with the authority to make laws to prevent perceived betrayals.” He was also given, under this doctrine, “the right and the power to found a new state and a new order.”

Trump’s “leader principle” justifies in his view all the lawlessness he has displayed since taking office. His pardoning the January 6, 2021 rioters he incited, his trying to end birthright citizenship, his impounding funds that Congress allocated, as well as his illegally firing government workers and eliminating agencies is “justified” by this anti-democracy “leader principle.” So is his handing power to “co-president” (NOT) Elon Musk and his DOGE organization. I repeat, IMHO, Trump is an authoritarian trying to destroy our democracy.

It is now time for Democrats in the House and Senate to fight 24/7 without stopping against Donald’s anti-democracy moves. Again “Team Blue” legislators must demonstrate, demonstrate, demonstrate in all 50 states with their constituents and in D.C. at least once a week. Democrats should assemble a team of House and Senate members to communicate strong attacks against Trump without stopping from now on until the 2026 midterms across the country. We must email, write, and phone our Congress Members on both sides of the aisle to take on Donald. Democrats must shame GOP “moderates” to oppose every one of Trump’s appointees and legislative moves. We must not sit back anymore and allow this dictator wannabe to destroy our democracy. And in 2026, Democrats must vote in droves plus to take back the House, where only a net 3-seat flip is needed and try to recapture or at least narrow the GOP Senate majority. Our democracy is truly at stake.
