The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns. We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on follow.
There are butterflies flitting about and blooms are spewing lots of pollen (just don’t ask my wife about her allergies). During my recent outings to film Osprey, I did take photographs and video of other things. I’d like to share those with you.
Bald Eagles are still around and raising young. They perform normal activities seldom noticed. The one above had just bathed. This is the aftermath.

Refreshed and restored
Dogwoods have opened their flowers and splashes of white are seen every where.

American Bluebirds are raising chicks and soon will be leading them to forage beyond the nest.

Tree Swallows are arriving and looking for nest sites. The male below was looking into the Bluebird’s home. A short spat convinced the Swallow to move on.

Walking around bodies of water one will naturally stumble across a turtle. This snapping turtle was moving to another location.
Snakes are also showing themselves. Here is a Cottonmouth Moccasin.
clarifying features
Some birds seek their meals while flying. Gulls are one species that will.
Ring-billed Gull
Northern Harrier also hunts from the air
Other birds forage directly in the water.

White Pelicans circling for a landing
Sounds are also an important part of Spring.

Finally, I present my Bug of the Day. This is a Giant Cranefly — Tipulidae family. Though this is a large insect (over two inch body length) they can land safely on the water letting their long legs spread the tension over a large expanse.
Please share your own sights and sounds of Spring.
