Those of you who've read some of my diaries here in the chess puzzle haven may have noted that my reading picks are mostly in the realm of science fiction, with a predilection for space opera. My fav authors in this vein are Iain M Banks (Consider Phlebas) and Alastair Reynolds (Revelation Space). But every so often an author comes along who can spin a great tale, but one that is (mostly) rooted in existing science rather than the speculative stuff like faster-than-light travel that is the staple of space opera. Andy Weir is such an author.
I haven't read his first book The Martian, but I've seen the film twice and it's a cracker about an astronaut who gets inadvertently left behind when his team needs to evacuate Mars in a hurry. He ingeniously figures out how make Earth aware of his presence, and manages to grow food to keep himself alive while awaiting rescue.
So when I saw that his latest novel, Project Hail Mary, was garnering good reviews I decided to pick it up just before going on holidays. Needless to say, I've not been disappointed. All I can say about it is that in the near future, Earth is in trouble. And through a series of unfortunate circumstances it becomes left to a high school science teacher to use his wits and general know-how to save the day. I can unreservedly recommend it.
And now, on to tonight's puzzle. Below are links to an on-line board to help you work the puzzle, and the solution. But don't peek at the answer until you've made an honest attempt to solve the puzzle, or you'll spoil the fun!
