I’m going to start with a personal story today. As some of you may know this 3X/week series of mine was born out of frustration with comments I was seeing here and on twitter and Bluesky repeating the easy refrain of, “where are the Democrats?” or “why aren’t the Democrats doing x?” It was especially disheartening to see it here — on a site for Democrats. I’m someone who spends a little bit of time each day on social media and can find the Democrats doing lots of the things we want them to quite easily. So instead of leaving this site I decided to launch this series.
As Marc Elias said so perfectly in his 10 Things We Can All Do To Protect Democracy, we need to:
2. Help Democrats The success of any opposition movement rests on the opposing party taking power. This is not a minor detail; in our system of government, it is the essential goal. Next time you want to attack a Democrat for being too much of this or too little of that, realize that you are only helping the GOP. Instead, find a Democrat you support and volunteer or contribute to their campaign.
I encourage you to read his entire list. It’s worth 3 minutes of your time to do so. The item I showcase above is important — we may not agree with everything someone is doing or not doing, saying or not saying, but we have to keep our eye on the prize!! The prize being mitigating or stopping the horrific actions of this administration.
Ok, back to my personal story. I’m just as mad/frustrated/distressed and upset as the rest of you. I’ve also moved beyond the henpecking any Democrat for not being perfect. Marc Elias is correct — we have to support the party. We are the change we hope to see! (a somewhat close statement to what Pres.Obama said).
I saw this the other day and it set me off:
I spend time each day reposting Democratic Party members’ posts. I sometimes join the calls the DNC hosts because I want to know their strategy, too. I also fill my days with the things that are not political — housework, errands, grandkids, sick spouse, watching shows, reading, cooking & gardening. I also do a weekly protest in my little ‘burb. If I have time to follow Democrats’ actions and words, so does Ms. Watts.
I was pissed — this kind of post is so divisive, unhelpful, and as Marc Elias says, helps republicans.
I replied. Surprisingly, she quickly hid my initial tweet that showed that there was a more recent strategy call, and then blocked me. She did leave my 2nd reply available.
I was a little bit surprised by her post. But then again, anger sells. Division sells. At the time of my screenshot her post already had 59 thousand views! She did what she did so her original message wouldn’t be contradicted by my reply.
I had unfollowed her at least a month prior for something similar. I don’t have time, and frankly none of us have time for this kind of bullshit.
It’s hard to resist the impulse to join in on this type of sentiment. I totally get it. I’m upset. I’m frustrated by this administration as I’m sure you are too.
But, eyes on the prize…eyes on the prize people!

x Didn’t expect such a crowd last night in Silver Springs Shores—should’ve brought more chairs. But what a problem to have. The room filled, voices rose, and the energy was electric. So many folks, all gathered because they care about where this country’s headed. That matters.

Janesmom and Janesotheraunt doing their M-F protest, which is not to be confused with the weekend protests they attend.
Seriously, these two spend time EVERY day working on their signs. On the weekends they usually join larger protests in Seattle. They are an inspiration. And, yes, they vote, and they talk to other people to make sure they’re doing what they can to protect our democracy.
x Some of my favorite people doing their M-F protests above Montlake Blvd in Seattle. Give them a honk and a peace sign if you see them!! Not shown is my resister sister who is taking the picture.
