Note. Upon reading my diary, it’s kind of a downer, so it’s fine to skip it. There’s still joy in the world.

Shortages

Covid’s appearance in 2020 made us aware of the world’s supply chain, a concept that most of us had accepted as the norm. Who will forget hoarding toilet paper if one could even acquire any? Empty shelves began to appear in grocery stores, as shortages of various foods began to manifest. Gradually the system began to correct the imbalances and the shortages faded as a major problem, though still appearing from time to time.

Inflation has become a major problem, causing financial worry for individuals, and even political upheaval in election results. Though it affects most purchases it is felt most glaringly in grocery prices, since nearly everyone has to shop. Shortages seem inevitable, for a number of reasons. Mass deportation of agricultural workers, increasing climate change, fuel costs, increasing fertilizer prices, strikes and hoarding could affect food supplies. Many of our foods are sourced from other countries , which will be affected by tariffs and xenophobia. Diseases such as bird flu will affect supplies of food.

During covid the most glaring food disruption I experienced was the near disappearance of pastas of all types. The price is still inordinately high. Empty egg shelves and purchase restrictions were a wake-up shock for Americans. Have you seen food shortages where you shop? Do you expect this in the future? Have you made changes in anticipation, such as more gardening or backyard chickens?

Unemployment from a weakening economy, curtailing of the social net (social security) and mass firings will exacerbate shortages.

Have a nice day.
