“No one knows what the f**k is going on”: Trump to announce tariff plans on 'Liberation Day' [1]

Accomplished Presidents run well-oiled administrations. The only thing well-oiled in the Trump administration is Pete Hegseth — although I suspect many Trump staffers are discovering the joys of alcohol this weekend. Why? Trump has been promoting next Wednesday, April 2, as “ Liberation Day .” What does this entail? Nobody knows. Probably not even Trump. As one ‘White House ally close to Trump’s inner circle’ told Politico :

“No one knows what the fuck is going on.” Adding: “What are they going to tariff? Who are they gonna tariff and at what rates? Like, the very basic questions haven’t been answered yet.”

Politico reports that

Just days out from Trump’s April 2 announcement of global tariffs, which he has hailed as “Liberation Day,” even those closest to the president — from Vice President JD Vance to his chief of staff Susie Wiles and his own Cabinet officials — have privately indicated that they’re unsure exactly what the boss will do, according to three people who have spoken with them. While some details of the administration’s plan for what Trump has dubbed “reciprocal tariffs” on global trading partners are starting to trickle out, the president has at times upended them or floated contradictory policies that are keeping everyone — even his inner circle — guessing.

The best guess is that Trump will say he is bringing ‘clarity’ to his tariff strategy. Although ‘Trump clarifying’ is a case study in oxymoron. He’s like a toddler with alphabet soup proudly announcing that she has organized random letters into ‘words.’

Anyone trying to narrow the range of possibilities is on a fool’s errand. Trying to predict Trump’s rates on which goods from which countries is like guessing the winning lottery number. Adding to the chaos is that whatever Sponge-brain announces on the 2nd will change by the 3rd.

With luck, Trump’s main goal that day will be an attempt to deflect from disastrous GOP election results on the 1st. This April Fool’s Day, the voters in Wisconsin will elect a state Supreme Court Judge. And voters in Florida will fill two vacant, ruby red US House seats in Florida.

The Wisconsin judge race is likely to be close. Fingers crossed for liberal candidate Susan Crawford. (It’s technically a non-partisan race. But the candidates are clearly left vs right.) Musk has made the race about him. And, along with fellow fascists, the South African immigrant has spent $13 million to buy a favorable outcome.

Meanwhile, in Florida, the number to watch is the margin. FL District 1 (Matt Gaetz’s old seat) went for the alleged drug-befuddled, statutory rapist by 32% last November. The GOP advantage in FL District 6 (ex-home of current Trump National Security Advisor and Signal incompetent Mike Waltz) was 33%. If the Democrats keep the margin to single digits in either seat, that would be a red flag up MAGA’s ass.

Note: Polls in the 6th District have the race in a statistical tie. If the Democrat Josh Weil wins, Trump will have to release the Moscow pee tape to distract from the calamity.

Regardless, nothing Trump can say will calm America’s business and finance community. A cohesive tariff plan would be an economic downer. Trump’s plan will not be cohesive.

As Politico added:

Indeed, while the White House is projecting confidence publicly, multiple administration officials, as well as top allies on the outside, are privately concerned that next week’s roll-out could be as rocky as when he imposed tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China on March 4, worsening a rout on stocks that began in mid-February. Though the S&P 500 has since regained some ground, all of its previous gains since Election Day have been erased.

Journalists are not good with numbers. “Regained some ground” is not the best way to describe a market that has lost 563 points (-10%) from its February 19th high under Trump — is only 59 points off its Trump low — and has lost 200 points since Tuesday.
