Maybe save this for Sunday morning! I’m not sure I ever got Oklahoma, so this is really, really good. I never thought I’d say this, but I want to go to Tulsa. This is a long read , but uplifting and not focused on current events. What America Can Learn From Tulsa Washington Monthly .
In March 2019, I arrived in Tulsa for the first of what would become a long series of visits. A local philanthropic foundation, the George Kaiser Family Foundation (GKFF), had invited me to see their urban revitalization program, which they hoped would bring people and investment back to the post-industrial city reeling from the decline of its energy industry. ✂️
I literally teared up in places. It’s simply a must read.

From Michigan Advance there’s this article
The US and Canada have long managed the Great Lakes together. That era could be ending.
Great Lakes Day is an annual summit where politicians and officials of all stripes gather in Washington, D.C., to demonstrate their commitment to the region home to the largest freshwater ecosystem on the planet. For years, leaders from the United States and Canada have met at the event without incident. But earlier this month and amid a tariff dispute between the two nations, the Trump administration abruptly disinvited two Canadian mayors from the long-standing White House meeting.✂️

Via Maryland Matters , Senate committee moves Second Look Act one step closer to final passage
After an hour of robust debate, a Senate committee advanced a House bill Friday that would let some long-serving incarcerated individuals to ask a judge for a second chance at life. By an 8-3 vote, the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee approved the Second Look Act, which would let individuals who have served at least 20 years in prison petition for a reduced sentence. The bill sponsored by Del. Cheryl Pasteur (D-Baltimore County) passed the House on March 17. Sen. Charles Sydnor III (D-Baltimore County) sponsored a version in his chamber, but the Senate will work off Pasteur’s bill. A similar bill passed the Senate last year but stalled in the House.✂️
News from the States had a lot of headlines from Maryland this morning. It was nice to see. It’s also see that the Second Look Act is gaining traction. Please click on the Maryland Matters link above for more news from yet another place I want to visit.
As always, many thanks to News from the States for feeding me regional news.

From the North Dakota Monitor , Federal judge dismisses Standing Rock’s latest lawsuit over Dakota Access Pipeline
A federal judge dismissed the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s lawsuit against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeking to shutter the Dakota Access Pipeline, finding that the tribe must wait until the Army Corps finishes a key environmental study to bring another legal challenge against the agency.✂️
I’d say something bad about the US Army Corps of Engineers because I’m not happy with their pace in releasing the report nor with the ruling. But in my last job I ended up getting a pretty good feeling for what the corps did and the professionalism they show. When the final report is published I hope that Standing Rock will sue again.

I’m trying hard to move east of the Mississippi River for regional sources, but it’s difficult for me. My biases are clearly showing. I’m from the western half of the US and I’ve never been to “the east” for even a week at a time (NYC or DC may have gotten as many as four days). The regional news is forcing me to confront that bias and learn more about the other half of the country.
Covering liberal states would be easier, but I also need to address our neighbors in conservative states, not treat them in a condescending manner. So I may just force us to read West Virginia news for a while.
So, let me introduce you to West Virginia Watch .
ACA has dramatically shifted West Virginia’s health care landscape
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law 15 years ago, and it remains one of the most consequential health care reforms in our country’s history. At the time it was enacted I was the CEO of Covenant House. We were the recipients of a small grant — awarded from West Virginians for Affordable Health Care, no less — that allowed us to act as Community Assisters. Covenant House advocates enrolled over 300 West Virginians — some of our most vulnerable citizens — in health care; for most it was the first time in their lives that they had access to health insurance. Over the last 15 years, the ACA has expanded affordable coverage to people previously locked out of health insurance, lowered premiums and out-of-pocket costs, and helped the nation’s uninsured rate reach an all-time low. Unfortunately, dismantling it remains a top Republican priority as they look to give tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy and big corporations. ✂️
Expect a lot more in sympathetic coverage from West Virginia as we move forward. At first glance, it’s hard to find good news coming out of there. Is that a symptom or the cause?

Today is…
National Pita Day . Actually, I’m a PITA every day, but other than that... I need to get some hummus. It’s a PITA to make. One of the local co-ops sells bulk tahini. Garbonzo beans are easy...
National Pita Day is on March 29 and celebrates the dipping, scooping, and wrapping of as many ingredients as we can think of into this delicious bread. We want everyone from around the globe to celebrate with National Day Calendar as we indulge in a prehistoric delight from the Middle East. ✂️

National Nevada Day .
On October 31, 1864, Nevada joined West Virginia as the only other state to be granted statehood during the Civil War.✂️
For our dear friend Maru!
Yet another place I’d like to visit more.
