Why not? Reasons NOT:
1. Because it will be administered by Trump and his people. The rich, pro-Ukrainian businessman from Norway and the journalist, whose parents are rich, who has written negatively about the Trump tariffs — will be rejected, even though they have the 5 million. The oligarch from Russia, the businessman from Hungary, the member of the Saudi royal family — will be allowed in. Unfair. Trump and his people will stack the deck with media savvy voices who supposedly represent their compatriots.
2. Because it will have almost no benefit to the US treasury, as a percentage of our wealth or debt. The money will be insignificant.
3. Because it will have a corrupting effect on our culture. These rich people will try to replicate in the United States what they had back in their own corrupt countries. They will have servants that they treat like slaves. They will try to influence Americans to view poor people the way they view poor people: inferior, disposable.
4. Because other people deserve our time and attention more. Other people benefit our country with their hard work, their idealism, their skills, their understanding of and agreement with American ideals.
5. Because it doesn’t matter what Mexico or Ecuador or any other country offers. The rich people who want to move to the U.S. could move to one of these other countries at a moment’s notice. They don’t. The U.S. is a much more precious, wealthy, powerful place. Our police force protects you better here, and you need to spend less money on private security.
6. Because of the corrupting networks that come with the corrupt people. A member of a crime family’s family, a corrupt oligarch’s corrupt government can continue their corruption inside the United States. They can funnel money through their vessel, the five million dollar immigrant, to corrupt businesses and politicians. They can sometimes have acts of violence carried out against their enemies. Some of these enemies might even be people from their home country who are now in the United States.
