JD Vance says Denmark ‘has not done a good job by the people of Greenland’ – Europe live- The Guardian

Denmark 'passed it all off to brave Americans and hope we would pick up tab,' Vance says Asked about the president’s policy to acquire Greenland, Vance once again attacks Denmark, as he says Trump was clear that “we respect the self-determination of the people of Greenland.” But he says he is willing to make an argument to them that they would be “a lot better having coming under the US security umbrella than you have been under Denmark security umbrella.” “Because what Denmark’s security umbrella has meant is, effectively, they’ve passed it all off to brave Americans and hope that we would pick up a tab.” Turning to Greenlanders again, he says both president Trump and himself “hope that they choose to partner with the United States, because we’re the only nation on earth that will respect their sovereignty and respect their security, because their security is very much our security.”

Now for the reality

From forced evictions to Vance's visit, Greenland base encapsulates history of Denmark-US relations — Le Monde [in English]

But the controversies surrounding it remain. The story began in 1941, when Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany. Fearing that the Third Reich would take control of the island, the Danish ambassador to Washington, Henrik Kauffman, signed an agreement with the US secretary of state, Cordell Hull, placing Greenland, a Danish colony, under US protection.

"At the end of the war, Denmark kindly asked the Americains to leave," recounted Marc Jacobsen, associate professor at the Royal Danish Defense College. But the Americans refused, citing the Soviet threat.

Ah, the Rouskies. Very convenient, except when we are not kissing Putins asp.

Three months later, Operation Blue Jay began in Pituffik. In the greatest secrecy, 300,000 metric tons of building materials and equipment, along with 10,000 men (4,000 civilians and 6,000 soldiers) landed on the west coast of Greenland. In the space of 120 days, they erected the Thule base, which was operational from September 1952 and the cost of which has been estimated by historian Jorgen Taagholt to be $230 million, or 60% of the Danish budget in 1952.

For the local population, the first trauma occurred the following year. The US wanted to deploy anti-aircraft batteries around the base. Just before Greenland became a Danish province in 1953, giving its inhabitants the same rights as the Danes, Copenhagen ordered the relocation of 27 families of Inuit hunters 130 kilometers to the north, to the village of Qaanaaq

Then there was a second trauma. On January 21, 1968, an American B52 bomber, carrying four hydrogen bombs, crashed a dozen kilometers from the Thule base. Six of the seven crew members managed to extricate themselves from the aircraft. But the bombs exploded on the pack ice, dispersing radioactive material and debris, which sank into the sea

You can read about the scandal of Operation Crested Ice on PBS

The bomber – call sign HOBO 28 – had crashed due to human error. One of the crew members had stuffed some seat cushions in front of a heating vent, and they subsequently caught fire. The smoke quickly became so thick that the crew needed to eject. Six of the 7 crew members parachuted out safely before the plane crashed onto the frozen fjord 7 miles west of Thule Air Base – America’s most northern military base, 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

The US, based on the next agreement of 2004, can do basically what it wants on the ice; all it needs to do is consult with Denmark and Greenland. See the link below.
