FL-06 Update. Fired Up and Getting It Done! [1]

Early Voting continues in FL-06; tomorrow is the last day (of early voting). A brief update before i hit more doors today.

FL-06

I wrote in an earlier diary this week what we are doing to boost turnout here by knocking and dragging voters to vote early. It’s a variation of what we’ll do on election day, hopefully with a larger contingent of volunteers. 292 people have come out to help turn out the vote here this week, mostly from outside the district. But we’ve created a little bit of a buzz here, and people are watching what we are doing. Not all of them are Democrats.

But we’ve gotten a lot of “catnip” from the press this week, “it’s almost like we matter!” one voter told us. People have been impressed by how much money Josh Weil has raised (until they realize that the district is covered by 3 media markets, two in the top 20).

Hope Springs from Field PAC [dated website] volunteers have been knocking on doors in FL-06 since the first weekend of February. FL-06 has a special congressional election on April 1st due to the resignation of incumbent GOP Rep Michael Waltz. We not only canvassed on Saturday and Sunday but this week, we are “dragging” voters from their doors to Early Voting centers. We aren’t knocking on doors before 11 am this week, but we are canvassing until Early Voting ends each day. For many of us, it’s a very long day.

Still, people are enthused. One of our volunteers told me that nothing makes him happier than putting MAGA's feet to the fire. Every detail about MAGA getting upset or concerned is consumed with glee. Yeah, that’s “their” word, not mine. Glee. “Roast a Republican,” someone said. People here seem especially joyful that it’s getting national attention. The NYTimes writes But there has been growing concern among Republicans in recent days about the special election to replace Mr. Waltz, the embattled national security adviser who has drawn criticism for his involvement in a leaked Signal chat about a military strike on Yemen in which he included a journalist. What was supposed to be a safe seat has become a competitive race. And several people have texted me this quote with some choice comments: “Republicans, meanwhile, are fretting about a potential embarrassment.” Like i said, glee. And i’ll tell you what, it makes it easier to ask people to get in the car and take a ride to a Early Voting Center. One thing i have noticed in these last two days is that Democrats are suddenly a lot more chatty (and less gloomy) than they were previously. This Politico article is posted on the wall, with this highlighted: An internal GOP poll from late March showed Democrat Josh Weil up 3 points over Fine, 44 to 41 percent, with 10 percent undecided, according to a person familiar with the poll and granted anonymity to discuss it. Glee, i tell you, glee! Like Election Day, volunteers who do the dragging are expected to knock on a door three times (hence three rounds throughout the day), hoping to find the targeted voter at home. If we do (find the voter), then we ask them if they have voted yet (“early voting is happening right now!”) and, if not (as expected), “we can take you to vote right now!” This has actually been more successful in this district than usual, because there are a higher number of seniors, many of whom don’t mind being ferried to the polls!
