Expats beware, DOGE is coming for you [1]

I know there are quite a number of expats on this site who draw Social Security, so If you are one or are a person outside the country who knows someone in this position, this is a heads up. DOGE, in its infinite wisdom </s> has its sights trained on you. We have had a number of contradictory letters from SS in the last month, so I reached out to our American family to see if they had as well. My SIL sent us a link to this site:
www.selfemployed.com/…
which says in essence, if you didn’t receive your Social Security in February, you are likely to have been suspended.
If you did, and the payments were incorrect, according to this FP diary, you could be in a world of hurt going forward if they try to claw back what might have been their mistake.
Here’s a few quotes from the article just in case you aren’t keen on clicking links.
“According to the SSA, over 700,000 beneficiaries live in foreign countries as of December 2023. Around 59,000 live in Mexico and 2,000 in Costa Rica. U.S. Embassies in several countries have sent out notices about the suspended payments.
The U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica stated, “If you did not receive your February benefit payment, your benefits have been suspended.” Similar messages went out to those in Mexico, Haiti, and other nations.
Not all Americans abroad are affected right away. Those under 90 who receive their own benefits and have a Social Security Number ending in 50 to 99 do not need to submit the form now.
They will get a form to complete between June and July 2025.”
and
“Once the unit receives the necessary documents, benefits should be reinstated within about seven business days. The SSA sends these questionnaires to beneficiaries outside the U.S. every year or two. The answers help determine ongoing eligibility for benefits.”
If you do not receive the form when expected, contact the SSA or your Federal Benefits Unit.”
Neither my spouse nor myself have had anything similar to the document they’re describing except when we were first signing up for SS.
Anyway, hope this information helps some Kossaks. Keep your eye on bank deposits and keep any letters you get from SS for the record.
Oh, and F*CK YOU ELMO.
