Daily Bucket - Bald Eagle chick update. [1]

There is not an “Eagle Cam” for the aerie in Grenada, Mississippi. The Big Bear nest (starring Shadow and Jackie ) is wonderful and worth every moment I have spent “tuned in”. Here is the link to that addictive viewing. Proceed at your own risk of captivation.

However, we have Eagle nests that can be observed the old fashion way. I heard there were chicks in Grenada and drove down to catch them on film. I showed the two photos from my February 17th visit. But, it never hurts to review them (title and following picture).

feeding time

5 weeks have passed since I drove to Grenada and I was curious to see the progress of the eagle family. Here are my photographic and video findings.

Big chicks full of life

I found the chicks alone but alert. Like any young creature, there is the temptation to explore one’s surroundings. The following video shows the curiosity of environment versus a known skill.

flexibility training.

Dad was guarding the nest from a nearby tree while mom was out shopping for breakfast.

The nest is close to the road (150 feet) that seldom has traffic or people stopping to watch the eagles. I don’t spend too much time observing the nest to avoid a nervous response from the raptors. A few minutes can produce natural activity that is worth filming.

I heard a faint screech and saw Pop eagle launch toward the river. I figured it was mom signalling her return ( a change of guard). I decided to head toward the swamps of Grenada Lake for new sightings.

There is one slough that always has frogs singing. It has been a great site to capture wildlife. Here is the view when I arrived (looking south east).

5 acres of flooded marsh

My luck improved when I noticed movement just 20 feet from the road.

American Bittern

I finally spotted the secretive Bittern. I had recorded audio of this bird at Winter’s start last year. I didn’t think I’d get so lucky to have it appear in the open.

At first, it behaved as if hiding in tall reeds ( a classical defense of the species is shown below ).

As soon as I was deemed “non-threatening” it began stalking for it’s lunch. I am privileged to have seen this and am proud to share that moment. I now have a photo of last year’s “Lifer”.

I was so excited, I drove home and created this diary. I hope the outdoors gives each of you as much pleasure and adventure ( excitement included ) as I get. I encourage you to share any of your thrills here.

The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns. We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. My Bug of the Day is commonly seen across the country during the Spring. I have anticipated the emergence of Dragonflies and my wish have been granted.
