The echo chamber of right-wing media has done untold damage to the United States and other countries. On balance, it seems digital media innovations are proving to be more anti-social than not.
However, some technologists sincerely seek the betterment of human society, not in the ways Hitler tried to "improve" it. The good folks at The Computational Democracy Project have brought us
pol.is "...an open source technology for survey research that leverages data science." Writer and founder of the Co-intelligence Institute Tom Atlee describes it as A Breakthrough tool for broader, deeper consensus.
Polis (sometimes written as pol.is, its website form) is an online participatory polling platform with oddly transformational potential. It offers all participants two simple ways to respond to a question from the pollsters: (1) they can submit their own short responses and/or (2) they can vote “agree”, “disagree” or “pass” on such statements submitted by other participants.
Audrey Tang is Taiwan's Cyber Ambassador at Large. Here, she describes how Polis and other pro-social software tools were instrumental in Taiwan's successful regulation of Uber -- overcoming that corporate behemoth's efforts to privatize profits and socialize the societal costs of its business practices, as it has done almost everywhere else.
