Trump Officials Response to Signal Security Breach is a self-inflicted wound

Prior to the attack on Houthi rebels on March 16, top Cabinet members participated in a group chat over a commercial non-secure app. Equally shocking, a reporter was accidentally invited to attend. When asked about the major security breach, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth angrily refuted that any war plans were disclosed and besmirched the integrity of Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg. At a Congressional hearing, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard claimed that no classified material was shared. Under questioning by Congressional Democrats, both Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliff were evasive and relied on the standard response that defense attorneys tell their guilty clients - to respond with “I don’t recall”. They looked like they were either lying or are clueless and incompetent.

Since the administration claimed that no war plans were shared and nothing was classified, Goldberg appropriately released screenshots of the texts which showed (two hours before the attack), the weapons (F18 bombers and MQ9 drones) and targets. Clearly, the success of the operation and our military personnel were put at risk.

We’ve also learned that the National Security Agency warned staff in February not to use Signal for sensitive information, citing concerns that the app was vulnerable to Russian hackers.

Once the administration realized that a reporter was accidentally invited to attend an extremely sensitive chat on a commercial unsecure app, they could have admitted that a mistake occurred and that a thorough investigation would commence. Instead, they escalated the problem by boldly lying and covering up the problem.

Remember, it wasn’t the crime of the Watergate burglary that led to Nixon’s resignation, it was his coverup.
