5 years ago today American cases of COVID-19 exceeded all other countries, with 81,578 cases and 1,180 deaths. Remember those days?
"We still have the trajectory going up. We have not turned the trajectory, nor have we hit the apex," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a news briefing Wednesday. The governor added that there seemed to be some early evidence that New York's "density control plan" could be helping to slow hospitalization rate projections but he appeared to treat the signs with caution at this stage. As of Wednesday evening, there had been more than 32,700 cases in the state, and more than 20,000 of those have been reported in New York City, according to the city's health department. There have been 132 deaths in Washington state, health authorities say.
Two days later our fearless leader threw some sand in the gears.
FDA issues an EUA to allow hydroxychloroquine sulfate and chloroquine phosphate products to be added the Strategic National Stockpile for the treatment of COVID-19. CDC distributes a Health Alert Network (HAN) warning against using chloroquine phosphate without the recommendation of a doctor or pharmacy after one person is made seriously ill and a second dies from ingesting non-pharmaceutical chloroquine phosphate (a chemical aquariums use that is commercially available for purchase at stores or online) to prevent or treat COVID-19.
One the same day we all got laid off.
A record 3.28 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week as the coronavirus pandemic shut down much of the country. The Labor Department's report for the week ended March 21 was one of the first official indicators of how many people have suddenly been forced out of work nationally. In the prior report, for the week ended March 14, initial claims totaled 282,000. "This marks the highest level of seasonally adjusted initial claims in the history of the seasonally adjusted series," the department said of the latest figure. "The previous high was 695,000 in October of 1982." The Labor Department's records go back to 1967.
I can’t wait for the next pandemic.
