For a few years, my sister and her friends have wanted to go to DC to see the cherry blossoms bloom in the spring. However, they never got it together to actually plan the trip. I figured this would another year where they would talk about going and then not. A couple of weeks ago, my sister asked me if knew of any good hotels near Union Station to stay and to send it to the person who usually organizes their trips. Luckily, the hotel the organization with which I do my lobbying always stays at the Hyatt on New Jersey NW which is basically 3 blocks from Union Station. It is a really nice hotel with great staff. It also happens to be in decent walking distance to Capitol Hill which is why it has the dubious distinction to being the main hotel for the January 6 rioters.
After sending off the information on the hotel to which her friend thanked me saying the hotel looks great, I never heard about whether the trip was ago until this weekend at this friend’s 40th birthday dinner. Still I was skeptical we would be going especially since they wanted to go this weekend, very last minute.
Much to my surprise, I came home from work to find out the trip is on. I, my sister, and two of her friends will all be going down to DC on Friday to spend the weekend in DC. We will be taking Amtrak from Penn Station NY to Union Station in DC and sharing one room to save costs. The only detail I have is we will be leaving when my sister gets home from work at 3:30 on Friday. We will return to NY Sunday night. I do not know who has booked the Amtrak tickets or the hotel room though I suspect it is the person to whom I gave the hotel information.
For all the times I have been to DC, this will be my first when the cherry blossoms are blooming. Had this trip been planned in advance, I probably would have booked an extra day or two by myself to try and get meetings with my senators and congresswoman. To me, it seems like a waste of a trip to not have that chance in this environment. My congresswoman is still claiming she will hold an in person town hall in April, but no information has been released about it yet. I do not remember either of my Senators holding a town hall near me, but I have not been as dialed in as I have over the last 6 or 7 years.
