Have you wondered about public support for Ukraine in the wake of Trump and Vance’s ambush of Zelensky in the White House? Gallup’s March 3-11th poll finds 46% of Americans now believe the U.S. is not doing enough to help Ukraine, a 16-percentage-point increase since December and the highest level of support for this view in data going back to 2022. The shares saying the U.S. is doing too much (30%) or the right amount (23%) have also shrunk.

A big source of this jump in support for “not enough” is a 31-point increase among Democrats (to 79%), and a 14-point jump among independents (to 46%), since December, marking new highs for both groups. Now 13% of Democrats believe U.S. involvement in Ukraine is at the right level, down 28 points, while only 8% say the U.S. is providing too much aid.

Republicans have consistently been the most likely to claim that the U.S. is giving too much aid, but their latest figure on this -- 56% -- shows an 11-point drop over the past three months. The share of Republicans saying U.S. support is at the right level has risen by an identical margin, perhaps because of loyalty of many to Trump administration policy.

Responses to questions about a ceasefire reveal more partisan differences, but also show that large percentages of Republicans are skeptical of the Russian point of view: 48% of them say a ceasefire would likely favor the Russians too much, and 69% say that Russia would violate the terms of whatever ceasefire were negotiated. However, 39% of Republicans also say that Ukraine would violate the terms of an agreement, and 24% are worried that an agreement would be too favorable to Ukraine.

Overall, the results suggest that the December polling represented the high-water mark for pro-Russian sentiment. Trump’s national security team has done much more to mobilize Democratic opinion in opposition than Republican opinion in support. The relatively quick Trump retreat on abandoning intelligence sharing and military aid for Ukraine suggests that they understand the lack of public support for their more openly pro-Russian moves.
