Hello everyone! I’m making my plea to all of you to consider joining the writers and critter herders of The Evening Shade! If you’ve ever felt you’d love to put your own voice to work to offer shade, please reach out. We’d love to have a different writer and herder each day of the week. Trust me. If I can do this, you can do this! Nanny Ogg has a comprehensive list of pointers. It’s easy! It’s fun! I promise!

===

So...funny thing. As I was preparing this shade, the computer gremlins ate my work! A huge THANK YOU to kraigo for helping me to salvage some of what I had. Hopefully I can put something together for us and actually publish it! 😎 Thank you so much kraigo!!!!!

Today the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, dropped the story that senior members of the Trump administration planned the March 15 U.S. attack on the Houthis in Yemen over Signal, a widely available encrypted app that is most decidedly not part of the United States national security system. The decision to steer around government systems was possibly an attempt to hide conversations, since the app was set to erase some messages after a week and others after four weeks. By law, government communications must be archived. According to Goldberg, the use of Signal may also have violated the Espionage Act, which establishes how officials must handle information about the national defense. The app is not approved for national security use, and officials are supposed either to discuss military activity in a sensitive compartmented information facility, or SCIF, or to use approved government equipment. The use of Signal to plan a military attack on Yemen was itself an astonishingly dangerous breach, but what comes next is simply mind-boggling: the reason Goldberg could report on the conversation is that the person setting it up included Goldberg—a reporter without security clearance—in it. ✂

The whole article is worth a read. Today, Democrats are calling for all of these morons to resign and Rs are yawning. It is frightening and infuriating.

x They are all saying they didn't disclose anything classified, so the questioners invited them to share the texts and guess what.

x If these men had any sense of honor, they would already have resigned. The fact that they are all still in their jobs is just as damning as their terrifying and lawless incompetence. — Timothy Snyder (@timothysnyder.bsky.social) March 25, 2025 at 8:43 AM

x Bennet: Did you know the President’s Middle East advisor was in Moscow on this thread? This sloppiness, this incompetence, this disrespect for our intelligence agencies and the personnel who work for him is entirely unacceptable. It's an embarrassment

Thanks to kraigo (AGAIN!) for finding this:

They are all in WAY over their heads here. Literally every single cabinet member is a dunce. And the felon is a dunce. And the vice felon is a dunce. And f’elon is a dunce, too, even though he’s supposed to be a genius. He isn’t!!

x The geniuses at DOGE are bringing us insights like "I'm not really sure why the tax agency for a country of 330 million people has a larger staff than a midsize bank"

I’m thinking liddle marco’s days are numbered. He’s looking more and more like a scapegoat, and this was BEFORE he was involved in the Big Leak.

Perhaps in response to the growing outcry over last weekend’s rendition of Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador under a legal justification a federal judge has found questionable, President Donald Trump last night told reporters that he didn’t sign the proclamation that set that legal process in motion. When asked when he signed the proclamation invoking the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, by which Trump claimed that Venezuela is invading the United States by sending alleged gang members over the border, Trump answered: “I don’t know when it was signed, because I didn’t sign it.” Trump was on his way to his golf club in New Jersey, and seemed to be handing off responsibility for the declaration to someone else, perhaps Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “Other people handled it,” he said. “But Marco Rubio’s done a great job. And he wanted them out, and we go along with that. We want to get criminals out of our country.” ✂

===

So much pushback to such a horrible act. Good news.

x Looks like the deportations under the Alien Enemies Act swept in innocent people That’s why we @sddfund.bsky.social filed an amicus brief w/ leading Conservatives opposing this heinous Trump wrongdoing I’ll discuss tonight @ 8pm ET w/ Anderson Cooper @cnn.com

Plenty of lawyers are available and prepared to file suits against this maladministration for illegal acts. At last count there are 137 pending lawsuits. That number is sure to rise.

Marc Elias is being targeted by the felon and I can only imagine the stress that causes. But he is a true hero and has written why he will never back down.

x I will use every tool at my disposal to protect this country from Trump. I will litigate to defend voting rights until there are no cases left to bring. I will speak out against authoritarianism until my last breath. I will not back down. I will not bow or scrape. I will never obey. Defiantly, ME

I love his response to the Paul Weiss law firm. 💙

x “But no one in the wider world can appreciate how stressful it is to confront an executive order like this until one is directed at you.” --Brad Karp. Fuck you, you coward.

And a follow-up…

===

Honestly, nothing is safe from the grifter in chief. This has been sort of flying under the radar because there are so many outrages right now, but it will probably become front and center soon enough. The felon wants to sell off our public lands.

x Chants of TAX THE RICH! From today’s Indivisible empty chair town hall for Darrell Issa - who just so happens to be the richest person in Congress. @velshi.bsky.social @lawrenceodonnell.msnbc.com @maddow.msnbc.com @indivisible.org

I hope “TAX THE RICH” becomes the Democrats’ rallying cry. Short, simple and easy to understand.

===

There are special elections in 2 Congressional races in FL on April 1. Both districts are deep red, but there are amazing democratic candidates in each. I have written postcards for both of them and while everyone pretty much knows the R candidates will prevail, it would be incredible if the Ds could pull out a hail Mary win or even significantly close the gap by which the felon won. (IDJT won by 30 pts in FL-6 and by 37 pts in FL-1). This story details the panic the Rs are feeling in Florida. That state has broken our hearts too many times to get too excited about a win here, but it’s nice to see the smugness being wiped from some R faces for a bit.

GOP leaders raise alarm bells over a Florida special election in a deep red district

✂ Still, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said the fundraising gaps are a sign that “the American people are not buying what the Republicans are selling.” “These districts are so Republican there would ordinarily be no reason to believe that the races will be close, but what I can say almost guaranteed is that the Democratic candidate in both of these Florida special elections will significantly overperform,” Jeffries told reporters. ✂

===

I wrote postcards for Susan Crawford in Wisconsin and for Josh Weil in FL this weekend. It is a great feeling to be doing something that has a track record for helping because I’m feeling overwhelmed and a bit panicky at all the destruction being wrought on our nation and the world. This WI Supreme Court election will be a test for whether f’elon can or cannot buy an election. I want to make sure he has wasted a whole lot of money!!!

===

I love this picture so much. We have the best people. 😁

And it’s a good thing, too, because we need all the best people to clean up the gargantuan messes the felon is making.

x This continues to be the biggest story in the country: DOGE has already squandered half a trillion dollars in 6 weeks. Not billion. half a trillion, $500 billion talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/irs-p...

Dejoy resigned! As much as I’ve been hoping for this, didn’t it get lost among all the other crazy messes?!?

At least our Joe was able to appoint some sane people to that board so hopefully the next Postmaster General will be competent and better able to stave off the felon. Fingers crossed!
