My Epiphany [1]

I had an epiphany this morning. I woke from my slumber with the realization the catalyst for human change has always been women. I realized this in part from the biblical story of Adam and Eve. Eve gives Adam the apple of knowledge and humanity’s condition changed. Adam, the man in this tale, is scared of change and angering God so he did not want to bite the apple, in effect cementing fear of change as the primary principle Christian religions impose on its adherents, fear. Fear of God, fear of hell, fear of sin. The Christian/Judeo religious authority changed the belief system into a unitary god, and they made God a man. They eliminated the multiple gods of different sexes creating one single male figure as the all-powerful god. They also made the myth that woman came from a man’s rib stealing the power to create life from woman. All because they so feared the power of women to change the human condition. Could this be the reason that Judeo/Christian religions subjugate and debase women?

I also find it ironic that the apple is the symbol of knowledge and change in the religious text. If we think logically, and we take the belief that men were the hunters, that would leave the women as the gatherers. It is the gatherers that begin farming, and it is agriculture that begins civilization. Even in early civilizations we had women in positions of leadership and power. Even the great scholar and philosopher Plato exalted women through his beliefs in the Amazons. Plato is quoted in the worth of women by saying “a state develops only half its potential” when at the same cost and effort it could “double its achievement”. Plato is also quoted in saying “girls must be trained in precisely the same way as boys” in athletics, riding horses and wielding weapons”.

When we look at the contribution of women saving civilization again and again, it was women who stepped up and took on manufacturing roles to enable the warfighting efforts of the Allies against the Axis powers recognized through the posters of “Rosie the Riveter”. It is women who shoulder the majority of the burden in basic education at the lower levels, and that contribution has made the economic difference in this country and around the world by creating a smarter and more capable workforce. It is women that are in the numerical majority in the entertainment fields, but in the minority in recognition of their contributions. It is the same in the medical fields. This in my mind, only strengthens the realization that it is women are the catalyst for changing the human condition.

I know that these insights may upset the apple cart, some may even say that out of the mouth of fools come some truths, or that even a broken clock is right twice a day.
