Like Beethoven ripping up the dedication to Napoleon from his Third Symphony, modern composer Sergei Golovko does not want his Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra to ever again be known as “Russian.” On the YouTube page for the composer’s own performance as soloist with the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Christopher Kopke, Golovko explains:

Alternative name - The Russian Marimba Concerto has been removed from this video and forever. Russia is a fascist state, country-aggressor, every day killing innocent people in Ukraine. Composer's family (mum, brother) lives in Ukraine and every day experiencing horror of war. Sergei Golovko has condemns this aggression and has decided to come back to its original name given to this Concerto in 2008, when it was published.

But it was in Russia that Golovko learned his craft, and he has good reason to be proud of his Russian musical heritage, just as much as he has good reason to condemn Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

What if Shostakovich had written a marimba concerto? It might sound a little bit like Golovko’s, at least the way it starts out.

I didn’t quite get that impression from Britton-René Collins’s performance with the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducted by , I guess they omitted the snare drum.

There’s only one song by Paul Simon that I really like, though I haven’t really heard anything of his besides what’s in the albums The Rhythm of the Saints and In the Blue Light: “Can’t Run, But.” The original version uses marimba, the reworked version on the latter album does not. I like the song in both versions. The original is more relevant to this open thread, though Ukraine is mentioned in both versions (presumably to rhyme with “rain” more than for any other reason). This cover is closer to the original version. The kid on lead guitar is not as charismatic as Paul Simon, but the performance is overall good, in my opinion.

The open thread question: what is your favorite music with marimba solos?
