Itzl Alert Network: Tuesday, 25th of March, 2025: Birds of Wichita, Kansas [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-03-24

I bought me a book on birds:

A Field Guide to Backyard Birds of North America

I got the book so that I would have a checklist to work from, rather than relying on only my recall of birds I have seen.

The little dog is named Itzl. As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at, to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off Daily Kos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on Daily Kos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care! IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news! This is our current schedule of regular IAN diary writers: Monday: Youffraita Tuesday: bigjacbigjacbigjac Wednesday: Pam from Calif Thursday: art ah zen Friday: FloridaSNMOM Saturday: FloridaSNDad Sunday: loggersbrat

I went to the Daily Kos image library to post pictures of the birds.

(So much better than last week, when I gave you nearly zero images of the trees, just my descriptions and a few videos.)

Western Meadowlark

House Sparrow

Common Grackle

Blue Jay

American Crow

Cardinal

American Robin

European Starling

Mourning Dove

Canada Goose

The Western meadowlark is the state bird of Kansas.

Okay, to bring my text down closer to the pictures, I suppose I can simply type one character, over and over, to move my text down the page:

The House Sparrow is the most common of the small sparrows and finches.

(My first name if Mark, so that is why I chose the M.)

Sharp-shinned Hawk

The Grackle is my favorite bird.

I like the sleek profile, from the slender beak to the long tail.

Here is a smaller picture of a Blue Jay, to go with the picture at the top.

I think this is a drawing, not a photo, but still a good image of a Crow.

The Cardinal is such a very bright, bold shade of red.

Our good old friend, the red breasted American Robin.

The starlings land in happy little flocks, and peck at the ground, all around these apartments.

These doves look so pretty and innocent. And their song is “ooh a ooh, ooh, ooh.”

The geese only land near ponds and such, but they often fly over me at my home.

Nizz recently posted a nice peaceful poem about hawks, so I felt the need to include a hawk in this diary.

I am not sure which kind of hawks I may have seen near my home, but this one will do.

Great Horned Owl

I have heard owls outside my front door, many times.

Once again, I am not sure which kind are near me, but this one will do.

I have seen and heard woodpeckers a few times nearby.

I do not recall seeing the bright red head of the red headed woodpecker, so I am posting this one.

Go to Wiki to listen to the sounds of each bird, if you like:

Hairy Woodpecker

en.wikipedia.org/…

I have always thought that the sound of the Blue Jay seems like it comes from vocal cords made of stainless steel!

Ha!

Anyway.

I hope you enjoyed these birds.

Hugs!
