Sell Your Tesla Dump Your Stock

I suspect most of us don’t own either a Tesla nor (directly) Tesla stock, but this raises a point that’s perhaps salient for most of us.

✂️ If you want to sell your Tesla stock, that’s easy. There’s a robust market in the stock. Over 110 million shares traded on March 17. But there is the problem of figuring out how much $TSLA you own, According to the 2024 Tesla Proxy Statement, after Musk, the two largest holders are Vanguard and Black Rock, both huge in investment funds and pension management. If you have a 401k, an IRA, or a pension plan, you most likely own at least a little of the stock of Tesla. It has the 9th highest market capitalization of US stocks, This site says there are 517 ETFs that hold stock in Tesla. You probably wouldn’t expect Vanguard Consumer Discretionary ETF to hold Tesla stock. Its largest holding is Amazon at 23%, and it includes MacDonalds, Chipotle, Loews, Booking.com, and similar stocks. The second largest holding is Tesla, at 17%. I do not think of electric vehicles as a consumer discretionary expenditure. ✂️

I put up a note for myself to contact my financial advisor, find a list of the funds I own that invest in Tesla and how to contact them so I can request that they divest. Perhaps not a bad idea for many of us.

There’s too much to read here (although I did) to give a short synopsis, but this is really interesting. Empty Wheel again (this time by Marcy Wheeler). It’s about the court filings in the lawsuits against DOGE.

I may have gotten this through the Shade. If so, I couldn’t find who recommended it. Sorry if it’s redundant.

Disney Shareholders Almost Unanimously Reject Proposal to Remove Company from Corporate Equality Index

As a part of the recent 2025 Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Disney shareholders voted overwhelmingly against a proposal to stop participating in the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index. ✂️

That’s really salient part. Read more if you’d like.

Rays of sunshine as democracy is enveloped in darkness

A legacy of Wisconsin’s progressive tradition is its strong open records law, which compels the government to conduct its business in full view of the public and respond promptly to citizen demands for records from state agencies, public schools, city halls and police departments. Just before Sunshine Week, this week’s annual mid-March public education campaign celebrating the importance of open records and freedom of information, the Wisconsin Examiner proudly accepted the 2025 Media Openness Award from the Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council for our reporters’ work forcing police department records into the open. ✂️

Because good news can be hard to find. This is perhaps of most interest to meadowmist, but I read it too, if for no other reason than Wisconsin is my neighbor.

After Bridgeport voter fraud arrests, CT weighs election changes

Connecticut lawmakers are considering two pieces of legislation that would dramatically increase the state’s oversight of local election officials and implement new rules surrounding absentee balloting and curbside voting. The two bills are a direct response to an ongoing election scandal in Bridgeport, which resulted in the city’s 2023 Democratic mayoral primary being overturned in court and five Democratic officials being charged with more than 150 election-related crimes, including mishandling absentee ballots. That primary contest placed Bridgeport and Connecticut at the center of a national debate surrounding absentee voting and election fraud and generated calls for change to the state’s electoral systems. ✂️

The crimes in question were committed by Democrats, but you’re either for free and fair elections or your not. This gets Connecticut off my to-do list.

These next two are for Momma O and are from Kentucky Lantern . This gets Kentucky off my to-do list.

Ex-Gov. Matt Bevin grills adopted son about a pet dog in hearing on protective order

LOUISVILLE — An unusual bit of courtroom drama unfolded Friday when former Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin — acting as his own attorney — grilled his adopted son, Jonah, about an emergency protective order the son is seeking to keep in place against Bevin. Jonah, 18, adopted at age 5 from Ethiopia, alleges he experienced abuse and neglect in the Bevin home, culminating in his abandonment at a brutally abusive youth facility last year in Jamaica while he was 17. Jonah is seeking an extension of the temporary protective order he obtained March 7 against Matt Bevin, saying he fears him and wants no contact with him. Matt Bevin, seated beside his ex-wife, Glenna, at a table next to Jonah’s, spent about 30 minutes questioning him about a three-page statement Jonah provided in support of his request for an EPO — at one point challenging his claim that Matt Bevin had threatened to euthanize Jonah’s pet dog if the youth failed to follow his directives. In a series of questions, the one-term Republican governor, seated with a stack of documents before him, demanded to know who paid for the dog, bought dog food and purchased its dog bed. ✂️

What a weird drama.

‘Sextortion’ becomes a felony with Beshear’s signature as some hot-button bills await his action

Bills aimed at protecting Kentuckians from discrimination and sexual extortion have been signed into law by Gov. Andy Beshear. Beshear had signed the pair of bills as of Tuesday evening, but is taking his time on some high-profile legislation having to do with health and social services. Lawmakers broke on March 14 for a 10-day veto period and will return March 27-28, when the Republican supermajority can easily override the Democratic governor’s vetoes. ✂️

Today is…

Chocolate Covered Raisin Day (about a minute long)

National Cheesesteak Day (about three minutes long)

“Yeah, can I get that with Dijon and provolone cheese?”

Louie Anderson’s birthday! Hometown boy for me. This one is a bit long (16+ minutes), but I needed a laugh, so here we are.

I’m lucky that I had fantastic parents. After I moved down here, I think I lived in that neighborhood in St. Paul, though.

Post script…

There is no one in IT that I know of that is excited about “The Internet of Things” (I o T). Rather than bore you with a rant of my own, Jeff Geerling does a good job of ranting without my doing much at all.

I’ll grant you that I’m in the “old man rants at clouds” zone with this one, but it’s good to see someone whose work I respect and isn’t an old man, doing the same.

The Shade is open! Have at it, folks.
