Courageous residents, like Basel Adra, creator of No Other Land, document incursions into Palestinian West Bank communities in defiance of threats from Israelis. Palestinians live with daily restrictions, while some focusing on Israeli land and sovereignty at the expense of human rights and democracy call them illegal squatters and terrorists. Historically, those who have been seizing land through squatting backed by military might are Israelis.

International eyewitnesses, such as those from Center for Jewish Nonviolence, report extensive violations of Palestinian rights, theft of livestock, and seizing of territory by military backed Israeli settlers.

Then in the chatter, we heard a blood curdling scream. Instantly, we all recognized the voices as AJ's girls, a sweet family on the outskirts of Susiya, and the frequent target of attacks (recently, six settlers had broken into AJ's house and beat him with sticks). As soon as we heard that scream, we knew what was going on.

Veterans for Peace members have also been reporting from the West Bank. Here are some recent events. Basel is Basel Adra. Dates listed are for when reports were issued, which was within hours or a day of events on the ground.

March 11

Early this morning about 14 settlers attacked the village of Harainat al Nabi. Walking between houses, they pepper sprayed and beat residents, took our camera, broke our telephones and punctured our car tires. Police were called and were close by talking to settlers but didn't come to the scene until they had all left.

Settlers attacked a shepherd and sheep in Susiya

March 13

A group of settlers stole a herd of goats belonging to Fayez Al-Hamadin from Al-Fakhit village in Masafer Yatta and transported them to the new outpost established next to Al-Halawa village.

The theft took place under army protection.

March 15

A crazy evening here in Umm Al-Khair, in the beginning two young settlers came from the settlement and uprooted olive trees belonging to Palestinians. After that the security of Carmel, the settlement, along with the army raided one of the houses here in the village, checking phones and IDs of the Palestinians, and threatening them should they take any pictures of the settlement and the settlers.

Settlers attacked Palestinian shepherds from Tuba in masafer Yatta.

Second group of settlers going through Umm Al-Khair. Palestinians put up a fence this morning, but they still went past it even when we told them in Hebrew they can’t go through there.

March 18

Settlers attacked 4 Palestinians. The father protecting his kids was severely beaten and taken directly to the hospital. The kids are zip-tied and arrested.

Living with economic restrictions, Umm Al-Khair residents welcome food donated by the Hebron International Resource Network.
