Democrats' Biggest Obstacle in FL-06: Uninformed Voters who are ignore News & Current Events [1]

I’ve been canvassing down in Florida in northern Volusia and Flagler counties with Hope Springs from Field PAC [website which needs to be re-tooled] volunteers for two months now and i am struck by just how, in general, indifferent voters are here, how ill-informed about things outside of Florida and not really interested in current events or the news (outside of local news and weather). These doors aren’t MAGA doors, these are (a few) Democrats and (primarily) independent voters who are mainly just keeping their heads down.

I’ve canvassed Republican areas before, and, in general, when voters find someone at their door more sympatico than their neighbors, they are talkative and welcoming. Not saying the 66 voters from who i am drawing these observations weren’t talkative or welcoming or even helpful. Just that they were, those who indicated (or were recorded as) they were more Democratic, well, defeated. Not at all positive. That there was no fight left in them.

Of course, FL-06 is pretty deep red Florida. And Florida has its own distractions away from politics. One Democrat i met talked about how the weather made golf a year round activity and she didn’t really think of much else. “That’s what retirement is, and i haven’t been following anything else. We even will golf with a MAGA couple with similar handicaps and we all know not to talk politics.” I imagine other Democrats in the area feel similar constraints.

But if feeling surrounded is constricting, why don’t they think about that more? “We’re happy here. It has everything we were looking for.” But politically? “No, we came from a pretty blue state. But we’re exempt from the politics here.”

If there was a word that describes the difficulty for Democrats in this area, exempt would be the one.

Here’s the thing. The contrast between voters and Hope Springs volunteers is palpable here. And sometimes it helps. More than a few (Duval county) volunteers have stories about how their experience in the Jacksonville mayoral race (where a Democrat beat the Republican candidate) has made a voter more enthusiastic — one voter even used the term courage — to vote for the Democrat Josh Weil. Success breeds success.

Florida is a tough state, and, like i mentioned above, there are more than enough distractions here. But i’ve met more than a few voters who feel isolated from reality (iow, they feel like they live in “MAGA World” — yes, it’s a term you hear here).

Hope Springs from Field PAC began knocking on doors in FL-06 in February. We target Democrats and unaffiliated voters with a systematic approach that reminds them not only that Democrats care, but Democrats are determined to deliver the best government possible to all Americans. The voters we talk to continue to tell us they come away more invested in governance and feel more favorably towards Democrats in general because of our approach. So far (not including yesterday), we’ve found 2,519 voters who’ve told us they intended to vote for Weil. These voters are either included in our walk lists now or given to a special GOTV team to remind them they can vote NOW (and get it out of the way!)

Obviously, we rely on grassroots support, so if you support field/grassroots organizing, voter registration (and follow-up) and our efforts to protect our voters, we would certainly appreciate your support:
